It’s been nearly two years since AMC announced their plans for a prequel spin-off to their wildly successful drama, The Walking Dead, which follows a group of survivors of a zombie apocalypse in Georgia. While The Walking Dead is based on the popular comic book series by Robert Kirkman, the new series, titled Fear the Walking Dead, is an original story. As with TWD, Kirkman is also involved with Fear and co-wrote the pilot episode, which aired tonight.

Fear the Walking Dead takes place in Los Angeles, CA, during the early days of the zombie virus outbreak before the general public knew what was going on. The time frame of the events shown in LA coincide with the off-screen hospitalization of Deputy Rick Grimes just before he awakens from his coma in the series premiere of The Walking Dead, when most people had already been turned into flesh-eating undead “Walkers.”

More Fear the Walking Dead! It’s almost here! The 6-episode first season premieres this Sunday on AMC, after months of clips, teasers, news, first looks, and interviews. This could be the beginning of a WTU (Walker Television Universe) expansion, should this show be successful.

AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead, a prequel spin-off to their wildly popular series The Walking Dead, airs this Sunday, but the network has released the opening sequence online in advance of the premiere.

When The Walking Dead premiered on Halloween night in 2010, we saw Deputy Rick Grimes lying in a hospital bed waking up from a coma. The opening for Fear calls back to that moment, with an overhead shot of Frank Dillane‘s Nick awakening, but under much different circumstances. The young man, who’s a drug addict who’s failed out of college, makes a startling discovery in the drug den he passed out in.

Here’s a much longer look behind and in-front-of the scenes from AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead. This is so much more than AMC has shown before. Gritty Los Angeles was displayed once more, but this time, the context of the outbreak is interspersed throughout. It looks horrifying with many a jump scare. No wonder it has already been confirmed for a 2nd season.
