We Sold Our Souls review

We Sold Our Souls
Hardcover | Kindle
By Grady Hendrix
Publisher: Quirk Books
Release date: September 18, 2018

The myth of musicians selling their souls to the devil in exchange for success goes back to 18th century violinist Niccolò Paganini, a rock star in his own time. But of all the musical genres, this Faustian pact has become most associated with heavy metal, the modern-day “devil music.” It’s one thing to choose to sell your soul to gain fame and fortune, but what if someone bargained your soul away for their own benefit without your knowledge, leaving you broke and in despair? That’s what happens to rising star Kris Pulaski in Grady Hendrix‘s We Sold Our Souls.

In the 1990s, guitarist Kris Pulaski and her band Durt Wurk were seemingly on the verge of a major breakthrough. They had released several well-received albums and had toured the world, where they opened for the likes of Slayer and repeatedly won over live audiences. But then one night, Durt Wurk’s lead singer, Terry Hunt, deceived and betrayed his bandmates, tricking them into signing a contract that led to his – and only his – eventual stardom and their downfall.

All Hallows Read 2017

Fall is here and Halloween is only days away, which means it’s time once again for All Hallows Read! That means “sharing the joy and spreading the terror” of giving and receiving some scary books this Halloween season.

As usual, my book-loving counterparts here at GoD, Olympus Athens and Waerloga69, helped me pull together some reading recommendations for this year’s list. We have titles from Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Joe Hill, and many more, along with some Audiobook picks as well.

See below for our All Hallows Read: Halloween 2017 Book Recommendations…

Paperbacks From Hell
The Twisted History of ’70s and ’80s Horror Fiction
Paperback | Kindle
By Grady Hendrix
Publisher: Quirk Books
Release date: September 19, 2017

By the time I was 12, I had exhausted the entire catalogue of Nancy Drew mysteries, Judy Blume’s tales of adolescence, Tolkien’s Middle-earth, C.S. Lewis’s world of Narnia, and much more at my local library and had moved on to Stephen King horror novels and was on the lookout for more of the same. This was back in the 80s, aka pre-Internet, so I had to do a lot of judging books by their covers to figure out what my next selection would be. Thankfully, there were a lot of seriously eye-catching covers in horror fiction back then, and Paperbacks From Hell: The Twisted History of ’70s and ’80s Horror Fiction, a new offering from Quirk Books, is shining a spotlight on those long-forgotten gems.
