Warner Bros. Pictures
Rated PG-13 | 170 minutes

Director Peter Jackson returns to J.R.R. Tokien‘s Middle-Earth with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first entry in a new series of films that serve as a prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Set 60 years before The Fellowship of the Ring, An Unexpected Journey concerns Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), a young Hobbit who goes on a grand adventure with the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and a company of thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage).

Their goal is simple: reach the Lonely Mountain and reclaim the kingdom of Ererbor (and its golden treasure) from the dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch), the ‘Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities.’

The journey leads them from Bilbo’s home in Bag End in the Shire to the Elven stronghold of Rivendell and through the Goblin-infested Misty Mountains, where Bilbo encounters Gollum (Andy Serkis), a tragic creature who possesses a golden ring that will change the hobbit’s life forever.

That is, of course, the basic plot of Tolkien’s 1937 novel. Jackson’s film adaptation, however, makes extensive use of appendices and other supplementary materials to expand the 300-page children’s book into a trilogy of films that will eclipse nine hours of screen time.

Hugh Jackman In Talks To Return As Wolverine In ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’

Wolverine

Losing previous director Matthew Vaughn – possibly to Star Wars Episode VII – has not slowed down development on X-Men: Days of Future Past one bit. Shortly after Vaughn’s departure Bryan Singer, a producer on the Vaughn-directed X-Men: First Class, signed on to direct his first X-Men film since 2003’s X2. Then just yesterday Singer confirmed that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen would be re-entering the franchise as the older Professor X and his friend and nemesis Magneto.

One of the remaining question marks surrounding the casting of Days of Future Past would be whether or not Hugh Jackman would also be joining the ever-growing ensemble cast. He’s become the X-Men franchise’s star player and good luck charm so it should come as no surprise to anyone that Jackman is now in negotiations to return as Wolverine.

Patrick Stewart & Ian McKellen Return For X-Men: Days Of Future Past

Though Fox’s X-Men film franchise has gone through a few director and character changes, the films stayed within its own continuity. In X-Men: First Class, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender play younger versions of Professor X and Magneto. The film took a look at the relationship shared between Professor X and Magneto and how their differences would put them at different sides of a similar goal.

With Days Of Future Past set to begin production next year, newly appointed director Bryan Singer is confirming the return of the two aforementioned actors, along with Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult (Jack The Giant Slayer). Not only that, but the director has sent out a few tweets confirming that two actors who are very familiar with the franchise will also be making a return, and I don’t mean Hugh Jackman or Rebecca Romijn.

Singer confirmed both Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart would come back to reprise their respective roles as Magneto and Professor X.
