Ghostbusters Logo Title

Sony already has a reboot of the 1984 classic Ghostbusters in the works, featuring an all-female cast of ‘busters in Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon, but it turns out that project is not their only plan with the franchise moving forward.

After years of rumors of a Ghostbusters 3 being developed by the guys behind the original eventually became the all-female reboot mentioned above, it’s being reported that Sony has actually created a new production company called, quite fittingly, Ghostcorps, led by original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman and star Dan Aykroyd with the mission of finding branding opportunities based on the original.

Ghostbusters

As part of this year’s celebration of the 30th anniversary of Ghostbusters, some of the cast gathered for a reunion chat with Al Roker and Today, including Bill Murray.

Joining Murray was Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and director Ivan Reitman. Dan Aykroyd and Rick Moranis were not present, and of course Harold Ramis sadly passed away earlier this year.

You can watch a video of the reunited cast talking about the movie below.

ghostbusters

Ghostbusters, the paranormal, phenomenal spook comedy, which became one of the biggest successes and comedies of all time and spawned a rabid cult of fans in its wake, celebrates its 30th anniversary this week.

Directed by Ivan Reitman, and starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and the late Harold Ramis (the latter two co-wrote the script), Ghostbusters seemed to be the vehicle that crystallized everything about all of them. They had all worked together before — Murray and Aykroyd on SNL of course; Murray and Ramis in the army comedy Stripes, which was directed by Reitman, who Murray had also worked with on the misfits-are-in-charge of the Summer Camp comedy Meatballs — but the synergy that came on the screen with Ghostbusters was wholly apparent to all and, ultimately, became a film that spanned generations, and it was and is, a film that was for everyone and pandered to no one.

Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters 3, the sequel no one really wants to happen, is being made whether we like it or not. But as we reported yesterday it won’t have its original director at the helm. With Ivan Reitman departing the big chair to take on a producer’s role on the long-gestating supernatural comedy rebootquel, the job of directing GB3 will doubtlessly be filled by a younger director. Or if the latest rumors are based in truth, it will get two directors.

According to industry insider Nikki Finke, the latest candidates to direct Ghostbusters 3 are none other than the unbeatable team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller. With a string of surprise live-action and animated blockbusters like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, and most recently The Lego Movie to their credit, these guys are two of the hottest filmmakers working today.

Ghostbusters

Speedbumps are nothing new on the long road traveled by Ghostbusters 3. The planned trilogy-maker has met many obstacles and delays over the years, and, at the moment, is still here. Say what you will about the movie, but it is most certainly determined.

The latest speedbump comes in the form of Ivan Reitman, who directed the original Ghostbusters and its sequel and was attached to make the third installment. Reitman has decided to step down as director and let someone new take the wheel. He will, however, remain on the movie as a producer.
