‘Ghostbusters 3′ Script To Be Updated Following Harold Ramis’ Death; Sequel Will Continue

Egon Spengler

A third Ghostbusters movie has been in the works for over twenty years now, with co-writer of the original film Dan Aykroyd continually trying to get the project off the ground and having the main cast of the films return in some capacity, including Harold Ramis, who portrayed Egon in the movies and was also a co-writer. Ramis sadly passed away on Monday, and now we’re already hearing that meetings at Sony are being planned to reconfigure the sequel’s plot to account for his death.

Ivan Reitman, who directed both the original Ghostbusters and the first sequel, is currently attached to direct the third installment, from a current script co-written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, who were writers on The Office. In the most current version of the story, Ramis, Aykroyd, and Bill Murray would only make brief appearances in the film and whose characters would act in a baton-passing role to a new generation of Ghostbusters.

Ghostbusters

At the time it looked like Ghostbusters 3 wasn’t even going to happen. Developmental problems continually stalled the project, and the franchise’s biggest and most important piece, Bill Murray, wasn’t even interested, in reprising his role.

But there was some news that lead us to believe that this project wasn’t completely dead. Earlier this year Etan Cohen was brought in to rewrite the script. That was followed by Dan Aykroyd saying that filming would begin early next year.

Twins

1988’s Twins is one of many guilty pleasures born of the ’80s that plenty of people have seen and enjoyed for what it is. It’s not a movie, however, that anyone ever expected to see a sequel for.

But we should all be familiar with the times we currently live in, and now, over two decades later, a sequel to Twins might just be heading our way.

And what’s even more unexpected? It appears as though the hopes for said sequel is to have Eddie Murphy play the third brother to the original’s oddball twins, returning stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito.

Ghostbusters

Much like the R-rated Spawn movie Todd McFarlane keeps saying is going to happen but most likely never will, Ghostbusters 3 is a movie that is now apparently being kept barely alive through the sheer force of will belonging to the most vocal of its proponents, Dan Aykroyd. Ivan Reitman, the director of the first two Ghostbusters movies, and Harold Ramis, Aykroyd’s co-star and co-writer on the original 1984 comedy blockbuster and its less-successful 1989 sequel, have openly expressed interest in doing a third movie, while Bad Teacher scribes Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg have written a screenplay that would feature the original Ghostbusters passing their proton packs on to successors who would be younger and more accessible to modern movie comedy audiences.

No Strings AttachedNo Strings Attached
Directed by Ivan Reitman
Starring Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher, Kevin Kline, Olivia Thirlby, Chris “˜Ludacris’ Bridges, Greta Gerwig, Mindy Kaling
Release date: January 21, 2011

Boy and girl are sitting on a bench underneath the moonlight, probably at some middle school dance or summer camp. They are taking a break from whatever festivity it is that they are attending. The boy looks fairly shy and nervous, anxious to get to a certain point. The girl is more opened it seems. She’s possibly thinking that the boy is going to ask for a kiss. Or maybe he will even act hastily and sneak one. This is such a wonderful set-up that evokes the impulses and feelings we feel at the ripe age of fourteen. But my naiveté works against me here. What wishful thinking on my behalf! What comes out of the boy’s mouth (a question that is usually asked to a prostitute) is well beyond his age and his image. And the girl, disturbingly, remains composed at the question. Can it be that he is addicted to sexual acts at this stage of his life and she desensitized by such pleads? What a demoralizing thought. But my senses should have been more alert for the dialogue used by these two kids. Hell, why should American comedy hold back any thing? Crude is what American comedy does best. And this is 2011, so we should come to expect this kind of humor, vulgarity, cheapness, and conventionality.
