Ghostbusters 3

For as long as we’ve known about the possibility of Ghostbusters 3 happening, we’ve wondered whether original director Ivan Reitman would return to helm the trilogy maker. It’s been loosely confirmed many times that all of the original cast members would be returning though people like Rick Moranis and Annie Potts are still unknowns. And on top of that, writer/star Harold Ramis has already claimed that a 2011 release was happening.

Well folks, it wasn’t in any type of big or flashy unveiling, but while speaking to MTV on the red carpet for the National Board of Review in NYC, Reitman confirmed that he would indeed be directing the movie. Reitman explained that a draft was in the bank and that a second was being worked on right now, but didn’t say much when asked if he was in fact directing; he simply said “Yes” and that he “hopes to start shooting in this next year,” which is more than enough for us to be excited. Ivan hasn’t had the best of films recently, and he needs to slam dunk one here to keep up with his son Jason Reitman, who at the moment can do no wrong in the eyes of many.

Meatballs

We can all safely assume that if there’s a movie that you love that was made between 1979 and 1993, it’s going to be remade soon. All-the-same, we must try and cover each as it is announced, and today’s remake announcement is for 1979’s Meatballs.

The original movie takes place at Camp North Star — a dirty, low-class camp for people who don’t want to spend a lot of money to basically just dump their kids off and enjoy the summer to themselves. A young boy named Rudy (Chris Makepeace) is sent there, and he’s your typical quiet, shy kid who stays to himself. Tripper (Bill Murray), a member of the CIT (Counselor in Training) program notices Rudy staying in his shell and reaches out to him and they become friends — each helping the other in different fashions. While these two main characters are bonding, the camp itself is in a heated battle with the feared cross-lake rivals, Camp Mohawk. As we’ve seen in so many movies since then, the camps naturally must compete against each other in various events to determine the champion.

We’ve all been jumping for joy since it was announced last week that Sony/Columbia was moving forward with a third Ghostbusters film that would reunite the original cast of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson.

But there’s also been talk that Ghostbusters 3 would really center on the next generation of ghostbusters, possibly even played by some of the young actors who regularly appear in the Judd Apatow films.

So, if the new film — to be penned by Office scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky — will star a new, younger cast, what role will the original four ghostbusters play?

Ghostbusters star Harold Ramis — whose upcoming comedy Year One was scripted by Eisenberg and Stupnitsky, and produced by Apatow — revealed in an email to the Chicago Tribune’s Pop Machine that the idea is to have the original ghostbusters be mentors to their successors.
