With the big announcement over the last week of Peter Capaldi turning out to be the next Doctor for Doctor Who, I thought it might be timely to take a look at some of the work he’s been well-known for. The series, The Thick Of It, showcases one his most iconic characters: Malcolm Tucker, the foul-mouthed spin doctor in the British Government.

The series spawned a movie called In The Loop, where the government crosses paths with the American government in the planning for invasion of a Middle Eastern country.

The story begins with the leaders of the respective nations already planning on progressing forward with a preemptive strike on a country, in a comic parody of historic political events during the post-9/11 era. While the leaders convene committees and meetings across the globe to push the case for conflict, other operatives behind the scenes work on efforts to stop the warmongering.

Remembering ‘Sopranos’ Star James Gandolfini

James Gandofini

I’m still in stunned disbelief over James Gandolfini passing away last week. It’s like when this happened to John Ritter 10 years ago this year, the sudden, almost magician vanishing act-likr quick yet utterly tragic now you see him, now you don’t that Gandolfini also seemingly went through. Unlike a death where there was time affixed to it, and one laid up in a hospital bed withering away as their inner and outer framework slowly shatters, the death of The Sopranos star was as shattering for its unexpected abruptness as the death itself.

I make no bones about what an unabashed fan of The Sopranos I am AND a fan of the overall mafia/real gangster genre in general. From Paul Muni to George Raft; Jimmy Cagney to Lee J. Cobb’s turn as the heavy in On the Waterfront; from Marlon Brando as evil with a heart of gold patriarchal Vito Corleone in the original Godfather film to Al Pacino as the sibling successor in the latter two; Robert DeNiro’s portrayals of small time hoods with Joe Pesci in Martin Scorsese productions; to James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano.

Killing Them Softly PosterKilling Them Softly
Directed by Andrew Dominik
Written by Andrew Dominik
Starring: Brad Pitt, Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta
The Weinstein Company
Rated R | 97 Minutes
Release Date: November 30, 2012

Written and directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), Killing Them Softly is an adaptation of George V. Higgins‘ 1974 crime novel, Cogan’s Trade.

When South Boston low-lifes Frankie (Scoot McNairy) and Russell (Ben Mendelsohn) break into an illegal card game and steal the cash, they attract the attention of contract killer Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt).

The underground poker circuit is run by low-level mobster Markie Trattman (Ray Liotta), who becomes an immediate suspect because he robbed his own card game a few years back. The two thugs assume the blame will fall on Trattman, leaving them free from mob retaliation. As you might imagine, they assume wrong.

The South Boston mob sends a representative (Richard Jenkins) to sit down with Cogan to work out the details of Frankie and Russell’s demise, and what to do with Markie – who is living on borrowed time after his previous stunt.

Killing Them Softly is set in the months leading up to the 2008 Presidential election, where writer/director Andrew Dominik repeatedly hits us over the head with comparisons between a financial crisis, a corrupt political system, and the violent circumstances of Higgins’ crime-drama.
