Daredevil: Born Again Reboot

After being the center of the superhero news for the better part of the past few weeks, it looks like we are at the final lap of the controlling film rights to Daredevil. Even though Fox loved the vision that director Joe Carnahan laid out, it wasn’t enough for them to get the film into production before the October 10th deadline, which means that they are letting the deal expire and the rights will revert back to Marvel.

Variety reports that Fox had turned in an extension request to keep the character, only to see that request be denied. Yesterday, Carnahan recently tweeted that he didn’t expect to get the film into production any time soon and that his dreams of bringing his vision of Daredevil to life were pretty much dead. Last night, the director posted sizzle reel he created to pitch his vision of Daredevil to Fox.

Sizzle Video For Joe Carnahan's Would-Be Daredevil Reboot

Earlier today, director Joe Carnahan tweeted out that things were going south on his Daredevil reboot for Fox. The studio is about to lose the rights to Daredevil when the deadline runs out for them in October and the rights go back to Marvel Studios.

From what Carnahan has been saying, the people over at Fox loved his ideas for the reboot, stating that his Daredevil “pitch was tremendous and everyone flipped for it,” but that “the clock ticked down at Fox, that’s why it went tits up.”

Understandably, Carnahan is disappointed that his vision for The Man Without Fear won’t be making it to the big screen, so for his Twitter followers, he debuted two videos tonight that he referred to as “sizzle pieces” that he created to capture the essense of what he had planned for his Daredevil film. You can watch them both here below.

Daredevil

The Daredevil clock on Fox’s wall is ticking away and with each passing second the rights to the property are getting closer to reverting back to Marvel Studios. With the October 10th deadline looming closer, Fox is in a position where they might lose the film rights to Daredevil. Even Joe Carnahan, whom Fox hopes to direct the reboot, is beginning to lose hope that he will get to direct the Man without Fear.

Here’s what the director tweeted that could indicate that he may not be directing the Daredevil movie:

Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids.

Daredevil: Born Again Reboot

Up until last year, 20th Century Fox had been for the better part of the past decade at the receiving end of an unstoppable volley of vitriol over the increasingly shoddy cinematic treatment the studio gave to their three vaunted Marvel Comics properties: Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and Daredevil. Then last summer they released the Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men: First Class, which earned critical praise and a worldwide gross of more than $350 million – not a bad total considering the movie’s lack of bankable names (unless you count Kevin Bacon) and a coherent marketing strategy. First Class clearly proved that the studio was prepared to follow the example of Marvel Studios in how they develop and execute their superhero blockbusters, attaching talented writers and directors to make the features and making casting decisions not based primarily on demographic appeal.

In addition to the now in-production The Wolverine, Fox has a First Class sequel going before the cameras next year for a summer 2014 release that will be based on the popular and influential Days of Future Past from the original Uncanny X-Men comic series, as well as a reboot of The Fantastic Four happening with Josh Trank, who made his directing debut with this year’s wonderful found-footage superhero movie Chronicle, calling the shots behind the camera. The studio has been attempting to get a new Daredevil movie off the ground for a while now, but long-attached director David Slade (30 Days of Night) departed the project last month. This does not bode well for Fox as their option on the Daredevil character expires on October 10 of this year unless cameras are rolling on the new movie by then.

Desolate wilderness. A dire situation. Liam Neeson. A pack of hungry wolves. Clearly, The Grey is no slapstick comedy.

The premise is simple: a group of oil workers in the great white North and the man who protects them from wolves as they work are involved in a horrific plane crash. Out of many, only eight of them survive. But the plane crash was just the start. Led by the man who normally protects them, a survivalist named Ottway (Neeson), the group of men try to figure out their best chance for survival while also having to fend off an angry pack of wolves whose den is nearby.

As each minute passes, the group loses more and more hope. But Neeson pushes them to keep fighting…even as he himself battles his own will to push on and survive.
