It’s a few months into 2020, so it’s time for my Top 10 Movies of 2019 list. I meant to get this up earlier, but there were a few reasons for the delay, some good and some bad (some technically difficulties unfortunately). So let’s just get cracking on the 10 best movies I saw in 2019, and one that was released in 2019, but it took me a few weeks into 2020 to watch one of it. I was surprised to see the number of new movies was a little lower than normal. I signed up for the AMC Theatres A-List ($20 a month to see 3 movies a week), and thought I was going to see a ton of movies, but I guess I was busy with other things. I am going to make a solid effort to make up for that in 2020, although I am off to a slow start with one month in.

| Michael Lee’s Top 10 Favorite Movies Of 2019It’s that time of the year again where writers from various film blogs start to post their top ten favorite films of the year. Given that we see over 100 films a year, it is hard to narrow it down to a top ten list. Of course, not all lists are the same, and all of them are subjective. One list doesn’t necessarily define an entire year. Still, you are likely to find a similarity of choices of films on these lists. Looking back at the year, there have been plenty of movies that could have made the list from the blockbuster favorites like Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War to indies like Lulu Wang‘s The Farewell, and even some really great foreign films like Bong Joon-ho‘s Parasite and originals like Rian Johnson‘s Knives Out. Below I run down my top ten favorite movies of 2019.

| ‘Jojo Rabbit’ Making Of Featurette: What Inspired A Polynesian Russian Jew To Make The Best Anti-Hate Satire Of The Year |
|
Okay, I am just going to say it: Taika Waititi‘s Jojo Rabbit is one of the best films of the year. The anti-hate satire centers on a ten-year-old boy named Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) who has some difficulties getting through Nazi camp, and the only person who can help him with his troubles is his imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler (Waititi). When he discovers that his mother (Scarlett Johansson) has been hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic, Jojo learns that everything he’s been told about the Jews may have been wrong. Though the film is out in limited theaters now, Fox Searchlight has been releasing a series of clips and trailers after the film received critical acclaim from critics who viewed it at various film festivals. But this latest featurette is perhaps the best behind the scenes look at the film as it offers some insight from Waititi, as well as fellow co-stars Johansson, Sam Rockwell, and Stephen Merchant. Check out the video below.

| ‘Jojo Rabbit’ Trailer: It’s Definitely Not A Good Time To Be A Nazi
Taika Waititi is easily the busiest person in Hollywood. Sure, he directed some great indie hits like What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople before Marvel Studios signed him on to direct Thor: Ragnarok and its sequel Thor: Love and Thunder. Now he’s behind Jojo Rabbit, which Fox Searchlight has released an official trailer for. The film will be making the festival rounds and is positioned for an awards season run this November. Not only does Waititi direct this satirical history piece, but he also stars as an imaginary best friend to a young German boy. The twist on that is that the imaginary best friend takes the form of Adolf Hitler. Check out the trailer below.

| Disney Exec Worried That Taika Waititi’s ‘Jojo Rabbit’ Could Alienate Disney Fans
Last week’s reports that Disney would stop 20th Century Fox’s film development and focus more on key franchises like Avatar didn’t come as a huge surprise. The studio was bound to cut back on some of the smaller lesser-known properties. And the news comes in the wake of Fox Studios films operating at a loss of $170 million for the quarter. And now we are getting a new idea of how Disney might determine which films will be a part of the release slate, and which ones might fall by the wayside. We’re also learning that Disney is worried about edgier upcoming titles like Taika Waititi‘s Jojo Rabbit. More on all of this below.
