In 2012, Top Cow founder Marc Silvestri teamed with writer Matt Hawkins to bring about an updated, re-imagined version of his cyber-enhanced super-team comic, Cyber Force. Celebrating twenty years since the series’ first launch, the creative team brought on illustrator Khoi Pham and began a Kickstarter campaign to raise enough funds to provide the first five issues completely free of charge! The first volume provides a great introduction of the characters and story for a Cyber Force newbie like myself.

Carin is the daughter of the chairman and chairwoman of the CDI — a powerful cybernetic research organization that has been the guiding light to the world for many years. When 16-year-old Carin discovers that her father plans to systematically annihilate the human species in order to start the world over, she goes in search Morgan Stryker — a genetically modified cyber-human whom she believes may be able to help prevent the devastating scenario from occurring. Taken in by a group of rogue SHOCS — cybernetic soldiers — who are now deemed terrorists by the CDI, Carin has little time to convince them of her father’s plans, gain their trust, and find the one man who can help them all.

First Look: Witchblade #179

Here at Geeks of Doom, we strive to provide our readers with the very best the comic world has to offer. And there’s not much that can top presenting to you this awesome Marc Silvestri cover for Witchblade #170. An interesting factoid is that it’s an homage to another cover that Silvestri did for Uncanny X-Men #251, all the way down to using the same color palette.

Check out the cover right here below.

Sara Pezzini, a tough former New York City Police Detective, is the current wielder of the artifact known as the Witchblade. Possessed by a single woman in every generation, this weapon helps to retain the balance between good and evil. Existing since the very beginning, it adapts to the user and the needs of the world. Sometimes seen as bracelet or a gauntlet, it is unrestrained by any physical limitations which gives the wearer amazing abilities and power.

Can you blame an assassin if she were literally created for such work and have no recollection of her actions afterwards? This is the moral conundrum issued in Top Cow’s Aphrodite IX #2. Written by Matt Hawkins with illustrations from Stjepan Sejic, we are thrust into the harsh, violent and dystopian future earth alongside Aphrodite as she tries to find her place in the new world.

The struggle continues between Marcus’ race of genetically altered humans and their cybernetic, humanoid enemies led by Executor Chronos. Unfortunately for Marcus and his people, their new ally, Aphrodite IX””the green-haired female powerhouse with no memory of her past””is in fact an assassin by design; and what Marcus and Aphrodite don’t realize is that she is being controlled by Chronos’ new ally and Aphrodite’s old handler, Robert J. Burch. Already unaware of killing Marcus’ father, the king, Aphrodite is on a new mission that could very well bring on the collapse of the kingdom.

In the early ’90s, Cyber Force was one of those grim, X-Men derivatives that never quite pulled away from a packed genre. I owned the first issue back in the day, but never opened it. Probably because I thought I was rich. I’d forever ruin my fortunes if I ever smudged the cover with my grimy, mortal fingers. Twenty years later, I really have no clue what happened to that comic. Looking at the price guides, should I ever find it, I could possibly cash it in and for a foot-long sub and a soda.

Now that the get-rich-quick, collector phase of comics is merely a laughable side-note in history, many series born from that era are getting much deserved reboots. This past summer, Matt Hawkins conducted a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign to resurrect and re-imagine Cyber Force. He also promised to release the first five-issue story arc for FREE. That’s zero dollars. $0! This innovative utilization of crowd-funding is a concept that every comic fan should embrace. It’s like a movie theater letting you sit in on the first 30 minutes of a movie before asking you to pay to see the rest.
