In 1968, a horror movie from director George A. Romero came out called Night of the Living Dead. Nearly 50 years later, zombie horror is “alive” and well, with hit shows like The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead based on Robert Kirkman’s comic book series. Over the past decade, we’ve seen a renaissance of zombie fiction in all forms of entertainment, from comics to novels like World War Z (Max Brooks) and Pride & Prejudice & Zombies (Seth Grahame-Smith) to TV and film. Zombie even manage to cross over into other genres. The TV series iZombie takes the flesh eaters into the world of police forensics and the underground “brain trade.” Movies like Warm Bodies (2013) showed zombies can be romantic and of course Shaun of the Dead (2004) proved they can be the butt of jokes.

Though, there was a time when zombies were not the “it” thing in horror, but back in 1989, an undead anthology called Book of the Dead (edited by John Skipp & Craig Spector) made zombie literature cool again. Nights of the Living Dead is a collection of original zombie short stories all based in the world Romero built. What’s really interesting is reading the introductions by Romero himself and co-editor, author, and unabashed Romero fanboy, Jonathan Maberry.

With the release this week of Blackout, the third book in Mira Grant‘s Newsflesh series, we’re taking a look back at the second book, Deadline. Deadline picks up where the first novel Feed ended and starts off with Shaun Mason dealing with the consequences of this actions in the first book. For those who haven’t read Feed – warning: the next few paragraphs mention spoilery events from Feed.

After the demise of the main character and blogger extraordinaire Georgia Mason as a result of the virus inside her amplifying and making Kellis-Amberlee activate itself, her brother is forced to kill her so that she doesn’t turn into a zombie. This decision still haunts him in Deadline, which sees Shaun finding out that there may be more to the Kellis-Amberlee disease than previously thought, including the suggestion that he could have spared his sister’s life as she would have eventually fought the transformation.

Written by Seanan Maguire under the pen name of Mira Grant, Feed tells the story of Georgia and Shaun, a sibling blogger duo who live in a future where although cancer and the common cold are ancient history, zombies are active and stronger than ever. The two go on a crusade not only to fight the creatures, but also to challenge their government to do more to help others.

The book starts off with an intense getaway scene, the zombies chasing Georgia and Shaun. It’s high octane and exciting — the opening chapters are very memorable. The style and language are also highly readable, which makes a book like this more entertaining.
