It’s the news I’ve been waiting for. Sony Online Entertainment announced today that their DC Universe Online MMO will go to a free-to-play in late October. Players will be able to download and play the once costly title absolutely free through both the Sony Playstation 3 and PC. But those who have paid, don’t freak out just yet, you’re still going to get something. In fact, in this same announcement, SOE also stated that they will be offering three different tiers of membership: Free, Premium, and Legendary.

| Brian Bendis To Write Marvel MMO; New Details Revealed |
 |

Word of Marvel’s next try at a massively multiplayer online game (having tried before in a game that would eventually become Champions Online) started last week when they launched an official twitter feed and tumblr account [Read: Marvel Teases Details Of New MMO On Twitter & Tumblr]. Throughout the week, they have been dropping hints as to who would be writing the game, and it should come as no surprise that the game’s producers have tasked Marvel’s biggest writer. It was announced on Thursday at an event in San Francisco that Brian Michael Bendis, writer of The Avengers, Moon Knight, and Ultimate Spider-Man, would be writing the game. That was not the biggest announcement of the event though. No, the big news would be that the Marvel MMO will not only be a free to play game, but will also allow you to play as your favorite Marvel super. Bendis revealed that the game will allow players to take the roles of their favorite characters including Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, and even Squirrel Girl, among many many others. This alone will already set it apart from DC Universe Online, which relies on characters to make their own characters and only allows users to play the big DC characters in very limited areas. Bendis also revealed that the main villain of the game will be Dr. Doom.

| Marvel Teases Details Of New MMO On Twitter & Tumblr |
 |
Marvel is teasing details of its new MMORPG based on the Marvel Universe by setting up a protected twitter account under the guise of M.M.M. Society (@MMMSociety). The account’s description reads, “The Marvel Massively Multiplayer Society is your gateway to the Marvel Universe, Marvel’s upcoming epic MMO” and features a link to a password-protected Tumblr page.
Comic fans have been awaiting news of a Marvel MMO ever since the company terminated its plans to create a game with City of Heroes developers Cryptic Studios, (which later morphed into Champions Online). The MMM Society is the first bit of news we’ve heard regarding the company’s MMO since 2009, when Geeks of Doom was alerted to a job posting seeking developers for the project. But while a covert promotional campaign about a Marvel MMO may signal that we’ll start to see some concrete information about what to expect from the game, it will likely be years before it launches.

| Syfy Channel & ‘Rift’ Creator Trion Team Up To Create TV Series/MMO Video Game Fusion
Every once in a while a project so dauntless and ambitious that you almost have to cringe at what might happen if it all falls apart comes along, but with these projects also comes a pure excitement at the thought of them working. NBC Universal’s Syfy Channel and Trion Worlds have just such a project in the making, and if it works like they want it to work, it could quite literally change the world of entertainment forever and ever. Here’s the basic idea: Trion, who’s latest title, Rift, has many saying that MMORPGs that aren’t World of Warcraft can be made and enjoyed, have entered into a partnership to create a brand new currently untitled TV series AND online video game — currently being called a Syfy Action MMO — that live and breathe as one entity. Confusing, right?
