In honor of the release today of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, we’re devoting today’s Doom Digest to all things Prometheus and of course, Alien too!

In Ridley Scott‘s seminal 1979 film, Alien, the crew members of the Nostromo are awakened from hypersleep to investigate a mysterious beacon on LV-426, a natural satellite orbiting a ringed planet in the binary star system Zeta Reticuli [Yes, this will be on the quiz]. The year is 2122.

In Prometheus, Scott’s first science-fiction film since 1982’s Blade Runner, the year is 2089. Archaeologists Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) have discovered a star map within the pictographs and ideograms of several otherwise unconnected civilizations.

They interpret the star map as evidence of mankind’s forerunners, an open invitation to meet our makers. Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce), the elderly founder of the Weyland Corporation, funds the construction of the scientific vessel Prometheus to follow the map to a distant world – one in the Zeta Reticula system.

Ridley Scott‘s sci-fi/horror epic Prometheus doesn’t open in theaters in the U.S. until this Friday, although it has been playing in international markets for the past several weeks to mixed reactions and good box office. However, that has not prevented 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment from making the movie available for pre-order on DVD, Blu-ray, and 3D Blu-ray over at Amazon right now.

The Book of Alien

The Book of Alien by Paul Scanlon and Michael Gross was originally published by Heavy Metal Books in 1979. Ridley Scott’s return to science-fiction with Prometheus has sparked a renewed interest in the Alien mythos once again, so Titan Books has reprinted this 112-page art book, which features conceptual designs and illustrations that would come to define Ridley Scott‘s Alien as a science-fiction masterpiece.

The book features minimal information about the genesis of Dan O’Bannon’s script and the film’s production. Instead, The Book of Alien is an art book that focuses strictly on the visual aspects of Alien, filled with countless illustrations and photographs from the film’s production.

Artists Ron Cobb created hundreds of preliminary sketches of the interiors and exteriors of the Nostromo ship, which went through many design concepts, as well as the escape shuttle, Narcissus. Joining Cobb on the more human aspects of the film was artist Chris Foss, known for his covers of science-fiction novels and spaceship illustrations.
