The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “Oh, Canada!” Henchman 21 and “USA!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of July 2, 2014. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

A happy belated Canada Day to all my friends north of the border and a happy early Independence Day to all my friends in the U.S. Hope you all get to enjoy a nice three-day weekend, unless you have to work, which I can’t really help you with. What I can help you with is comics, specifically what comics to buy this week. So celebrate your freedom by supporting capitalism in all its glory and buying some comics. It’s what Cap and Supes and especially the U.S. Agent want you to do. And if you want to make them sad this week that’s fine, all you have to do is ignore the advice of The GoD List!

RoboCop Detroit Tigers game

You have to love crazy cross promotion, and we got a good example of it when RoboCop came home to Detroit to throw out the first pitch at Tuesday’s baseball game between the Detroit Tigers and the Toronto Blue Jays at Comerica Park. This was of course done to promote the release of 2014’s RoboCop on Blu-Ray and DVD. Some fans at the stadium for this specially dubbed RoboCop Day received a commemorative RoboCop poster and the Blu-ray edition of the 2014 film.

Check out the video of the first pitch here below, along with some photos from the event.

Along with attending the game, RoboCop also took the time this week to visit other Detroit hotspots like The Monument to Joe Louis, The Spirit of Detroit, and 8 Mile, as well as some radio stations AND he even reportedly did the weather report on local Fox affiliate WJBK-TV.

The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “Olympic Curling!!!!!!” and “Ugh, this again?” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of February 12, 2014. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

I don’t know if you saw last week’s list, but it was quite long because I had a lot of books to be excited about. That is not quite the case this week. That’s not to say there’s nothing to get hyped about. Certainly not with Marvel and Image launching a new series or twelve every week. So, let’s tell you about some series that are starting this week and one that’s coming to an end. Because everything old is new again on The GoD List!

“I’d buy that for a dollar!”

Directed by Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven, 1987’s RoboCop is a sci-fi satire that explores themes of greed, privatization, capitalism, dystopia, and identity. The film spawned two theatrical sequels, two animated series, and two live-action television series – not to mention comic books, video games, toys, and theme park rides.

Because the RoboCop franchise was popular and profitable in the ’80s, it was only a matter of time until Hollywood resurrected it. For an industry that rides a fine line between creativity and commerce, movie studios see remakes as a way to mitigate financial risk. Why take a chance on new ideas and original scripts when they can dust off a recognizable brand and put a “new spin” on it, appealing to the audience’s collective nostalgia for said brand? For studios, remakes operate on the simple principle that, even if it sucks, it will still make money.

And so here we are, in the year 2014, with a RoboCop remake by Brazilian director José Padilha, best known for the 2007 crime film Elite Squad and its sequel, 2010’s Elite Squad: The Enemy Within (the highest-grossing film in Brazilian history). The Elite Squad films are action-packed; filled with intense violence, police corruption, and political commentary, which is probably why MGM and Sony chose Padilha to direct in the first place.
