Ain’t no way to be prepared when Death comes knocking. This gun slingin’ motif is central to Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta‘s East of West. In East of West #3, the sci-fi western, dystopian future brings forth an abundance of revelation and makes it clear that a reckoning is a brewin’.
Seeking revenge and bringing “himself” as punishment to those who betrayed him and murdered his wife, Death has just learned that his beloved is in fact alive, hidden, and under constant watch by the House of Mao. With his two powerful native witch acquaintances, Death adds to his already fearsome brood and forges a new mysterious alliance. The Bounce #1
Written by Joe Casey
Illustrated by David Messina
Colored by Giovanna Niro
Lettered by Rus Wooton
Image Comics
Release Date: May 22, 2013
Cover Price: $2.99
Producing originality in the superhero genre has seemed to be a difficult task for creators over the years. To pull off a new concept while granting unique abilities to characters requires a good deal of ingenuity that, quite simply, seems to be lacking these days; however, the creative team of Joe Casey and David Messina have managed such an accomplishment with The Bounce #1 from Image Comics.
Jasper Jenkins is a professional slacker and stoner””the perfect cover for his other occupation: a superhero. Dressed in a black and yellow spandex suit, he curls himself into a ball and bounces off walls. Through the momentum gained from the impact, Jasper can remain spinning in the air as long as he keeps bouncing; kind of like a bouncy ball. It seems he also has the capability to make a person’s insides bounce around in a very painful manner, as demonstrated while fighting a super strong villain who just murdered the police commissioner. He may have some exceptional aptitudes, but Jasper isn’t the only one. Super powered beings are showing up all over the city””good and evil””many with very unique skill sets; and if that isn’t enough, an underground organization is trying to break the barrier between realities using an ultimate, secret weapon.

Say what you will about its creator, but Youngblood #75 is just balls out FUN! This is totally a 90’s comic set in modern times, and that’s exactly what it should be. Looking for fun? You found it!
Jim McLaughlin puts out another great issue of this classic Image series. I can’t tell you enough how much PURE fun this book is! It’s got all the hallmarks of the Youngblood series that we grew up with, only better. There’s TONS of action, snappy dialogue, great superhero stuff, and a little touch of modern day situations. Besides the main story, McLaughlin sneaks in a couple of really interesting subplots that are going to be pretty fantastic when they come to fruition.

Thief of Thieves #2
Story by Robert Kirkman
Written by Nick Spencer

Letters by Rus Wooton
Image Comics
Release Date: March 14, 2012
Cover Price: $2.99
Thief of Thieves #2 might not feel like much of a comic at first, my initial feeling was that it was underwhelming, but let it gestate some. I think there’s something interesting going on here.
The writing is the big draw for the new series from Image Comics. Or, to be more accurate, the writing process itself. The publishers’ star scribe/Chief Operating Officer, Robert Kirkman, is utilizing his experience as Executive Producer on The Walking Dead and acting as ‘Show Runner,’ in TV terms, on the title, which, in comic terms means taking ‘Story’ credit. He’s said, in essence, that he writes the broad outline of the story and that a different writer per arc will actually script the book. Morning Glories‘ Nick Spencer is tackling the first arc.

Super Dinosaur #9

Release Date: March 21, 2012
Cover Price: $2.99
There’s a lot missing from Super Dinosaur #9. Like the Super Dinosaur theme song. Super Dinosaur toys. Super Dinosaur t-shirts. Super Dinosaur breakfast cereal. Super Dinosaur the 3-D ride. Super Dinosaur Underoos and of course, Super Dinosaur: The Flame Thrower. But, for the comic itself — it’s pretty much all there.
Robert Kirkman writes a great issue of a licensed property comic that never was a licensed property. Yes, this book is aimed at kids, but for someone like myself, and any reader who’s over the age of about 16, it reads like that comic you picked up when you were a kid. GI Joe, Masters of the Universe, Visionaries, Transformers, Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, whatever it was that we watched on TV or played with in the yard and then that one day we discovered that there was a comic book to go with it!! And we ate that comic up with a spoon!!! That’s the same feeling I got when reading this comic.
