Each and every week, I, “Not at SDCC!” Henchman 21 and “Ditto!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of July 8, 2015. Yes, it’s that time of year again, time for the biggest comics convention in America, even if the show has moved beyond being just about comics. But it’s okay, all comic conventions have moved past comics to one degree or another. Sorry, got off track there. It’s San Diego week, which means there are a lot of new series and big hardcovers out this week to entice buyers at the show and even those of us not at the show. In fact, it’s better for those of us not going to SDCC, because we don’t have to wait in line and then figure out how to lug all this stuff back in our luggage. So rejoice at the ease with which you can buy your comics, for it is truly a good week to celebrate comics. And celebrate we shall on this week’s The GoD List!

Marvel Comics announced last week that there are big changes coming to their world, with some of the first details about the upcoming Secret Wars #1, launching in May 2015. The 8-issue Secret Wars mini-series, which will be written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Esad Ribic, will officially start with a special #0 issue that will be released on Free Comic Book Day this year.

Secret Wars is the storyline that Hickman has been building to since he took over on Avengers and New Avengers back in 2012. The series starts with the merging of the regular Marvel universe and the Ultimate universe in what Hickman has been calling an “incursion.” This incursion has been getting foreshadowed for a while and will lead into the rest of the series, where the combined universe will become Battleworld, which is a call back to the original Secret Wars series from back in the 1980s.

Sleigh bells ring are you listening? In the lane, something’s glistening, a beautiful sight, we’re happy tonight, because we’ve got some comic book gift suggestions! That’s right guys and geeks, “The Hench” and “The Fac3” have reunited (and it feels so good!) for the sole purpose of giving all of your crazed souls a nice long list of comic books for everyone on your holiday gift list. This one’s going to be hefty, so make sure to pull out that list of folks you’re giving gifts to this holiday season, compare it with our list of all of this year’s top releases, and give Santa a head’s up on what everyone should be getting. Speaking of “should be getting,” should we be getting this list started? Yes. Yes, we should. Also, speaking for “The Face,” I’m pretty sure you could also get these for us. I’m just saying…

Rat Queens #3 (Image Comics – $3.50) returns this month, with two different covers by Roc Upchurch. And each cover, upon inspection, perfectly reflects the tone of the series.

Cover A depicts the titular quartet of hell-raising women doing what they do best: wreaking havoc. Creatures are stabbed, blood flies, and Hannah, the Elven mage, conjures a little magic to top it off. Cover B is more of a pin-up, but Violet – the hipster Dwarf – isn’t your stereotypical comic book pin-up model. She’s filthy, bloodstained, and beaten from her most recent brawl, with a nasty gash marking her left cheek. The look on her face says it all; it feels like a derisive message to the status quo, breaking through the fourth wall. “No, I’m not a sex kitten in a spandex outfit…I kick asses for a living. Deal with it.”

As we get towards the end of Marvel’s Infinity event, we’re starting to get the shape of what the universe will be like once the cosmic storyline comes to an end. One of the books that will spin out of Infinity was announced at New York Comic-Con this weekend with Avengers World set to release in January 2014.

Avengers World teams up writer Nick Spencer (Secret Avengers, Superior Foes of Spider-Man) with co-writer Jonathan Hickman (Avengers, Infinity) and artist Stefano Caselli (Avengers) and focuses on “the new heroes recently added to the team’s roster.”
