3 From Hell

Directed by Rob Zombie
Cast: Sheri Moon Zombie, Bill Moseley, Dee Wallace, Danny Trejo, Sid Haig, Richard Brake
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release date: October 15, 2019
Rob Zombie’s films are hotly debated and highly controversial. The rock star turned director broke onto the scene with his 2003’s House of 1,000 Corpses, a messy gore fest in the vain of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The film introduced the world to the maniacal Firefly Family and its three antagonists: Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie), and Otis Driftwood (Bill Moseley). Two years later, Zombie worked out the kinks and created a grindhouse masterpiece, The Devil’s Rejects. Rejects was an epic of dirt and violence and had one of the best endings ever; one that seemingly negated any chance of a sequel. In the decade and a half since, Zombie reimagined the Halloween franchise and made several films sharing his trademarked hellbilly style. But alas the Firefly family has returned, as Zombie completes his trilogy with 3 From Hell. After a limited theatrical run, the film made a return to theaters last week for one day only and is now available on 4k Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack.

Written and directed by S. Craig Zahler, Bone Tomahawk is a measured, macabre mash-up that’s equal parts The Searchers and The Hills Have Eyes.

A trailer was released recently for a movie titled Bone Tomahawk, which is all you really need to know because that’s a pretty bad ass title.

Creature
DVD
Directed by Fred M. Andrews
Written by Fred M. Andrews and Tracy Morse
Starring Sid Haig, Mehcad Brooks, Serinda Swan, Amanda Fuller
The Bubble Factory
Release Date: March 20, 2012
If you’ve seen one backwoods incestuous half-man, half-alligator creature feature, you’ve seen ’em all.
Directed by Fred M. Andrews, Creature follows an ex-Navy SEAL (Mehcad Brooks) and his trashy girlfriend (Serinda Swan) on a road trip to New Orleans with their annoying twenty-something pals.
The gang stops at a desolate roadside gas station owned by Chopper (Sid Haig, House of 1000 Corpses), who tells them the tale of Lockjaw, a backwoods abomination who is half-man, half-alligator. The incestuous and absurd folktale goes a little something like this: An inbred cajun creeper by the name of Grimley (Daniel Bernhardt) lost his family to a monstrous white alligator, which drove him to madness – and by madness I mean, he beat the shit out of that alligator and turned into a cannibal. Somehow ol’ cannibalistic Grimley transformed into Lockjaw, an alligator-man with a Glasgow grin that prowls about the swamps in search of fresh meat.

Release Date: July 20, 2010
Until the rise of home video in the early 1980’s, the best place to get quality exploitation cinema was to fire up the car and head out for a night at your local drive-in theater or dilapidated grind house, and during the heyday of exploitation, Roger Corman was the king of unbeatable schlock.
Today the prolific producer/director is as much known for his ability to churn out low-budget B-movies that would always turn a profit thanks to a shrewd marketing strategy that the blockbuster filmmakers of today would take and run with for a while before perverting into blandness, as he is for discovering or at least recognizing the hidden talent in some of the most important figures in the New Hollywood group of filmmakers that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s: names like Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Jack Nicholson, Peter Bogdanovich, Joe Dante, John Sayles, Sylvester Stallone, Ron Howard, Carl Franklin, Peter Fonda, and so on.
In the early 1970s, Corman founded New World Pictures, the independent studio where he made most of his more well-known titles and provided a training ground for many of today’s finest directors, writers, actors, and technicians. Recently the DVD label Shout! Factory bought the rights to most of Corman’s finest B-movie gems and have been releasing them to DVD and Blu-Ray under their “Roger Corman’s Cult Classics†banner complete with brand new high-definition transfers and tons of extra features, some of them holdovers from previous DVD releases. Several of these titles have never been available since the slow death of home video and I’ll be reviewing the two most recent releases from Shout! Factory, both making their first appearance on the little shiny disc, with my first review being Galaxy of Terror.
