When Star Trek Into Darkness ended, the crew of the Starship Enterprise was about to set off for a five-year mission. With the film officially set for a 2016 release, we will see what the mission entails. For the first time, Roberto Orci has spoken about Star Trek 3 since he was hired to direct the film.

People either love or hate the Transformers film franchise. On one hand, Michael Bay has helped bring the war between the Autobots and Decepticons to life; and on the other, we got to hear many variations of Shia LeBeouf saying “No, no, no.” But the popularity of the source material is one of Paramount’s cash cows, and now they will be extending it as they have announced that Transformers 5 will be hitting theaters in 2016.

Paramount made the sequel announcement recently at a film conference in Europe. Other titles announced for 2016 include: Star Trek 3, G.I. Joe 3, Beverly Hills Cop 4, Hansel and Gretel 2, and Paranormal Activity 5. Hit the jump for more info.

Now that J.J. Abrams is hard at work making Star Wars: Episode VII, Paramount Pictures and Skydance were in need of a new director for the third movie in their rebooted Star Trek franchise. Abrams directed the first two movies, 2009’s Star Trek and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness.

In what could be considered a risky move, the studios have decided not to find an established big Hollywood blockbuster director to bring in. In fact, they’re not even bringing in an up-and-coming director who might be ready to break out. Instead, it has been decided to hire writer Roberto Orci to direct Star Trek 3.

With Star Trek reboot director J.J. Abrams jumping over to the other side to take on Star Wars: Episode VII, obviously he was not going to have the time to make Star Trek 3 for Paramount.

But who will replace Abrams? That’s a question that still exists, but according to a report, Paramount is looking at Attack the Block director Joe Cornish for the job.

Paramount is eyeing a 2016 release for Star Trek 3, with or without J.J. Abrams at the helm. Most likely it will be the latter — one person from the cast hopes that he will make a return, but more on that later. For obvious reasons, one of them being that Abrams is busy working on Star Wars: Episode VII, the director will be unable to come back for a third helping seeing that there are some major scheduling conflicts. So the studio have their sights set on other names in hopes that they will fill in, now that Abrams has jumped to the other Star franchise.

LatinoReview is reporting that G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu is one of the frontrunners to direct the third Trek movie. Also, Star Trek‘s Karl Urban wants the third film to be more original and go back to basics. Hit the jump for more.
