When Star Trek Into Darkness ended, the crew of the Starship Enterprise was about to set off for a five-year mission. With the film officially set for a 2016 release, we will see what the mission entails. For the first time, Roberto Orci has spoken about Star Trek 3 since he was hired to direct the film.
Hit the jump for Orci’s full quote.
Here is what Orci told Humans From Earth:
In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space.
He even went as far as to name who the villain will be.
The Horta is actually the villain in the next one – no – they are in deep space now, so lets see what’s out there.
Star Trek 3 is set to open in 2016.
So now that we know the film is set moments after the events of Star Trek Into Darkness, what do you think about where the film is heading? What do you think about Orci’s choice of villain?
This will mark Orci’s debut in the Captain’s… err, the Director’s chair. I just hope that he and the studio are smart enough to make ‘Trek III consistent with the “visual language” that Abrams has established, lens flare and all!

I think they’ll do some Errand of Mercy type story, something with the Klingons and larger galactic forces at play.
