Star Wars title

During Comic-Con in July, there was a report that Star Wars: Episode IX was to be directed by Colin Trevorrow. At the time, it was suspected that he would make an appearance to confirm the news during the panel at Disney’s D23 Expo on Saturday. No such news came, and some had thought that Disney and Lucasfilm would let Rian Johnson, or even J.J. Abrams return to direct. But now we can confirm that Trevorrow is indeed directing Star Wars: Episode IX.

The announcement was made at the D23 Expo earlier today. While Trevorrow wasn’t able to make an appearance to talk about the project itself — heck Rian Johnson is still writing Episode VIII as we speak — the Jurassic World director was able to share some of this thoughts about taking on such an iconic franchise.

Check out what he had to say below.

Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow

There has been a lot of big Star Wars news happening as of late. With Chris Miller and Phil Lord becoming the new directors of the just-confirmed untitled Young Han Solo Film, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens panel happening tonight at San Diego Comic-Con, you can surely expect a new big announcements since it has been widely reported that there won’t be any new footage shown from the film. (It’s likely that Disney would probably much rather show footage at their own D23 Expo than anywhere else.)

One of the early bits of news is more of a rumor, but it is a pretty big one. According to Heroic Hollywood, Colin Trevorrow, the director of Safety [Not Guaranteed] and the hugely successful Jurassic World, will direct Star Wars Episode IX. More on this below.

J.J. Abrams On Star Wars: Episode VII Set Image

Star Wars: Episode IX is currently without a director. It has been long-rumored that Rian Johnson, director of Star Wars: Episode VIII, would helm the film.

The director has actually been attached to both films since last June, but was only confirmed to write and direct Episode VIII alone just last week. While the ninth Star Wars numbered film is still four years out, not to mention Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One and Josh Trank’s untitled 2018 Star Wars spinoff, a new rumor says that Disney wants to have none other than Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams return to be the film’s director.

Bob Iger Millennium Falcon

Not quite the Marvel Studios spectacle that Disney had planned, but the announcement of the release years for Star Wars: Episode VIII and Star Wars: Episode IX is great news nonetheless. When Disney acquired Lucasfilm back in 2013, the plan was to release one Star Wars film a year. The first would be Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opens in theaters on December 18 of this year. This would be followed by the Gareth Edwards-directed standalone film, which hits theaters December 16, 2016.

What happens after that is still unclear, as schedules do tend to change in the movie business. But in a recent Disney shareholders report, CEO Bob Iger revealed the release years for the untitled Star Wars Episode VIII and Episode IX, to be directed by Rian Johnson. Hit the jump to mark your calendars.
