20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Not much was known of the new Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea movie that was well on its way to us, but one might imagine that Disney had plans of bringing another massive water-filled adventure much like their Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. They had gotten so far as to hire Terminator Salvation director McG to helm the flick, and names like Will Smith were rumored for the role of Captain Nemo. None of this matters anymore now, as Disney has slammed the brakes on with force and stopped all forward progress on the project.

The movie was set to tell an origins tale of the fabled Captain Nemo and the building of his ship, the Nautilus. It was actually on the fast track at one point, but it appears that the controversial firing of popular chairman Dick Cook may have knocked it off its course for the time being. The original 1954 film starred Kirk Douglas and it was Disney’s very first live-action film production.

Your Mission, Should You Choose To Accept It: Get Sam Rockwell An Oscar Nomination For ‘Moon’!

Moon

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science voters, lend us your eyes. Your attention is demanded!

In a Summer movie season dominated by gigantic science fiction and fantasy movies like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Terminator Salvation, two much smaller sci-fi films from lesser-known foreign directors were the ones who stole all of the spotlights. Those two films were Neil Blomkamp’s District 9 and Duncan JonesMoon.

Now that all of these movies have come, said their piece, and gone, it does not mean it has to be the last we hear of them. One fan of Moon has taken that a step further, and has begun a campaign to get Academy voters to take notice of Sam Rockwell‘s performance and give it the attention it deserves, hopefully resulting in a Best Actor nomination. The movie, director Duncan Jones, and Rockwell have all been praised numerous times for the film, and it’s difficult to over-look the performance as it is right up on par with Tom Hanks’ nominated work on Cast Away. Rockwell has been around a long time and has given a lot of memorable performances, including some that were the only watchable part of certain films that we’ve seen over the years. So whether he wins a spot on the ballot or not, the man absolutely deserves to be considered.

Fox To Make New Western With Science Fiction Twist & No, It’s Not ‘Firefly’

Firefly

Just when you thought that Fox couldn’t enrage you any more than they already have, it has now been announced that Chuck producer Scott Rosenbaum is developing a new show for the television studio that will supposedly be an “epic Western with a sci-fi twist” about a gunslinger who is caught between two worlds. Rosenbaum will be producing the show with Warner Brothers TV and Terminator Salvation director McG‘s Wonderland Sound and Vision studio. No title or further details are known as of this moment.

The big catch in all of this, is that it sounds an awful lot like the basic premise for another former Fox title that just so happens to have a massive cult following of fans dying for its revival: Joss Whedon’s Firefly. Granted, the whole “stuck between worlds” bit sounds like it won’t be identical to Firefly, but it is still enough to scratch your head, and for some, maybe even become more angry.

Terminator

Around the time that Terminator Salvation was making its massive final push toward what ended up being a bit of a let down at the domestic box office, director McG and his movie were in the news what seemed like every single day. Whether it was a new image, a quote, or any other variety of things, it was all over the ‘net.

While out helping to promote the new TV show Human Target, McG got back to it, starting with what went wrong with Salvation, as well as some details on what could become Terminator 5.

Terminator Salvation Playstation 3Terminator: Salvation
Genre: Action/Shooter
Rating: T for Teen
Platform: Playstation3
Platform: Evolved Games
Publisher: Warner Bros.

As I like to do with just about everything I review, I’m going to open this review up with some full disclosure. I feel it allows you, the reader, to understand more fully where I, the reviewer, am coming from.

Ah, the Terminator franchise. I’ve had a love/hate relationship with it for as long as I can remember. Like pretty much everyone else, I thought the first film was amazing. The premise, the violence, the effects”¦ it all just worked. Then came T2, which pushed the effects envelope even further, turned the story on its ear by making the bad guy from the first film the good guy, and giving Hollywood a much needed badass female lead. But it had Edward Furlong and some goofy moments that kept it from being the classic I thought it could have been. T3 was such a mockery of the first 2 that I pretty much swore the franchise off. And then when McG (god it pains me to even type that as his “˜name’) came on board for Terminator: Salvation, I knew all hope was lost. In a nutshell, I think the franchise had a brilliant premise the collapses under the weight of the time-travel paradox, suffers from being a parody of itself at times, and can’t find the right fit to bring it to the glory it deserves.

All of that being said, I think The Terminator is the absolute PERFECT fit for a kick ass, thrill ride of a sci-fi game. There are so many ways it could go”¦ First Person Shooter, Role Playing, Real-Time Strategy, open sandbox style ala Grand Theft Auto.
