Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

A movie based on video game maker Naughty Dog’s hit Uncharted series is still in the works, but hasn’t had much luck with the tricky task of finding the perfect star to play primary protagonist Nathan Drake or figuring out how to get the script exactly where it needs to be.

According to reports, Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World star Chris Pratt is the most recent to be offered the role of Drake, but the actor has declined that offer. It’s also being reported that yet another writer has been brought in to work on the screenplay, Oscar winner Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty).

Sinister Six

A year ago Sony Pictures Entertainment had such high hopes for their rebooted Spider-Man franchise. Production on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was moving forth without a hitch and early footage from the blockbuster sequel screened at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con to an enthusiastic response. Back in December the studio was so certain that it was going to be the biggest movie of this summer, if not 2014, that they announced plans to exploit their ownership of the movie rights to the Spider-Man universe by developing spinoffs that would star Spidey villains Venom and the Sinister Six.

The plan originally was for Amazing Spider-Man 2 screenwriters Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Jeff Pinkner to collaborate on the Venom feature, while Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard would write and eventually be called upon to direct the Sinister Six movie. Then Amazing Spider-Man 2 opened to withering reviews from critics and less box office than the studio had initially projected. I haven’t seen the second movie in the rebooted series yet but the consensus is that the gluttony of villains, lack of attention paid to the main characters, and an anti-climatic ending that was to have paved the way for the spinoffs are what hurt its chances at the box office. A $706 million worldwide haul is hardly anything to sniff, but Sony was hoping that Amazing Spider-Man 2 would top out at a solid billion and change at the very least.

The Last of Us

If you’ve played developer Naughty Dog’s Game of the Year favorite, The Last of Us, you know how ridiculously good it is. You’re also likely excited for the new story DLC being released for the game, titled “Left Behind,” which will be released on Valentine’s Day (why waste money on flowers and chocolate when you can be playing this?). But would fans be interested in playing The Last of Us 2? That’s exactly what Naughty Dog is currently pondering—the other option being a brand new title.

Whether or not to make a Last of Us sequel is a tricky conundrum to work out. Some would be quite eager to jump into another story involving Joel and Ellie and what’s next for them, no matter what. Others, myself included, feel that—while another game in that world does sound awesome—the original is perfect, and trying to add to it could be damaging to the overall story.

Continue reading to see what Naughty Dog says about what’s next for them, as well as where they stand on The Last of Us being released on PlayStation 4.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

The long-in-development movie adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hit video game series Uncharted is moving forward again. After an unsuccessful run with American Hustle director David O. Russell attached to direct—which famously went south quickly with fans after reports of Mark Wahlberg starring in the lead Nathan Drake role and Russell wanting to add Drake’s father and uncle for a family element surfaced online—and also the hiring of The Illusionist director Neil Burger to try his hand at making the movie ultimately not working out, a new director has been brought in.

It’s being reported that Seth Gordon, the director behind comedies like Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief, has entered into negotiations for the job.
