As I gear up for a bumper-to-bumper 2-hour or so ride to my family’s house for Christmas, I’m reminded of how instead of sitting in holiday traffic, I should be at the movies seeing the eleventh Star Trek movie right about now.
See, Christmas Day was the original release date scheduled for Paramount’s Star Trek (then dubbed Star Trek XI) from director JJ Abrams, which was recently moved to May 8, 2009 as the studio now views the highly anticipated film as a summer tentpole.
That’s real great and all, but I had been planning for months to see the movie on Christmas — actually at the Christmas Eve midnight showing to be exact. I had already prepared all familial quadrants for this event. As soon as I said that the new Star Trek movie was to be released on Christmas Day, nearly everyone knew what I was going to say next anyway, since my love of Trek is quite well know. So, Christmas Eve midnight showing (in lieu of church, sorry Grandma), then if the movie was totally awesome, another showing with the nieces and nephews some time on Christmas Day. It wasn’t easy, but I got everyone to except my decision.
Do you know what I had to do to get that happen? This is CHRISTMAS!!!!
Then, Paramount moves to date. No Trek Christmas for me *-(
But, Christmas doesn’t have to be devoid of Star Trek. TrekMovie has listed the schedules for the SCI FI Channel’s Trek marathons. For those of you celebrating Canadian Christmas, you lucky bastards are getting all 10 Trek movies; here in the States, we’re getting a Star Trek: The Next Generation marathon.
The folks over at TrekMovie also have an exclusive photo of Leonard Nimoy on the set of Abrams’ Star Trek gettng a make-up touch up.
So, although I didn’t get my Trek Christmas, I’m hoping that the extra months I’ll have to wait for the film will be well worth it. At the very least it seems to have allowed for the time for Majel Barrett-Roddenbury to complete the voice work for the ship’s computer before she passed, and for that, I’m truly thankful.

I think Paramount figured the new Trek would stand a better chance of making a healthy buck in the May slot that has done well for Spider Man and Iron Man in the past. I agree. Plus this Christmas is so stuffed with turgid family flicks and Oscar-pandering prestige items that Star Trek would probably have suffered as a result.
Then again, we still have The Spirit. Merry Christmas to all my fellow Geeks of Doom!

I think Paramount figured the new Trek would stand a better chance of making a healthy buck in the May slot that has done well for Spider Man and Iron Man in the past. I agree. Plus this Christmas is so stuffed with turgid family flicks and Oscar-pandering prestige items that Star Trek would probably have suffered as a result.
Then again, we still have The Spirit. Merry Christmas to all my fellow Geeks of Doom!
