20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Armageddon vs. Deep Impact. Volcano vs. Dante’s Inferno. These are just a couple of the known cinematic battles that have taken place over the years when two movies of almost identical content matter are produced and released around the same time.

Recently we’ve heard about Disney’s plans to make a new movie based on the Jules Verne classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which was originally set to be directed by McG, but will now be delivered by a one David Fincher. Now comes word that 20th Century Fox is developing their very own adaptation of the underwater classic to compete.

The studio has Ridley Scott and Tony Scott and their Scott Free Productions developing the title, with Travis Beacham writing the script. Beacham was one of the writers on the recent remake of Clash of the Titans, and also is one of the writers hired for the remake of The Black Hole, which is through Disney.

No director is attached at the moment, but it is said that an offer is out to Timur Bekmambetov to do the honors.

Other dueling movies on the way include another Sherlock Holmes (which at this rate might be done in time to compete against Guy Ritchie’s sequel) which stars Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell, and a pair of movies about The Three Musketeers — one of which just announced a fantastic cast.

At the moment it appears that this new Fox 20,000 Leagues has jumped in and will probably be completed first. David Fincher is expected to direct another movie before starting the Disney job. If this is the case, it could be quite a while before we see signs of movement.

  2. Fox’s version will probably be better, especially if B-kov is directing. I really liked the Night Watch movies. However, I have to ask why is someone makeing a crappy sherlock holmes with farrel and cohen?
