Rumor For Your Thoughts: ‘Batman 3’ To Grab Joseph Gordon-Levitt For The Riddler?
space
The Movie God   |  @   |

Summer time can typically be responsible for one big flaw in movie news: the heat makes people rumor-happy-wacky-insane. Some of them may end up holding some truth; most of them — like the recent reports of what we could expect from Indiana Jones 5 — will end up being denied to the end as completely false.

These rumors are usually an aggravation to all, but when one has any kind of reasonable source or backing to it, it has the ability to catch some eyes. With that said, here’s one to feast your eyes and thoughts on.

Hollywood Life has word from a source close to the action that Joseph Gordon-Levitt could just be a favorite for director Christopher Nolan to cast as The Riddler in the untitled follow-up to 2008’s The Dark Knight, currently known as Batman 3.

This is the rumor everyone is running with anyway; from my perspective, it doesn’t seem to be quite that clean cut. The inside reports seem to state that since Gordon-Levitt joined the cast of Nolan’s upcoming Inception, the two have indeed talked about the young star joining the third Batman film, but there is absolutely no indication of who he would be playing in the movie, if even in it at all.

There’s no denying that Gordon-Levitt is a very talented actor, and probably not a terrible choice — though many would dub him far too young (or young-looking) for the part, as well. We also can’t forget that the actor is almost as popular as Johnny Depp (also previously rumored for The Riddler) when it comes to the rumor game. He was a top name to replace Tobey MacGuire when it looked like he would be vacating the role of Peter Parker in Spider-Man; he’s been rumored already to be taking on the role of The Joker in Batman 3 after the late Heath Ledger played the part to perfection The Dark Knight. It only makes sense to bring him up here, as well.

So let’s say for the sake of entertaining discussion that yeah, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a top choice to play The Riddler in Batman 3. What would you think?

Personally, if I could get in a room with Nolan, I would beg and plead for him to cast Paul Bettany as Riddler. That’s always been my top choice for the role. It will always remain my top choice for the role.

  1. Levitt is a great actor. He could do it. I have no doubt it.
Depp and Bettany are great choices too.

  3. I wish he’d cast Daniel Day Lewis for a role, heh.

  4. Oh I don’t like that idea at all! He’s already the Cobra Commander.

But then – I’d prefer David Tennant as The Riddler and that’s never going to happen. :(

  6. Joseph’s great but…
    Tennant!Tennant!Tennant!
David would be bloody fantastic. I would, however, be happy with Bettany – super talented.

  7. Forget movies, make a TV series then you can have multiple actors play the roles like in the 60s series. But more serious like Nolan’s movies. It doesn’t seem right to only let one person do it and then call it quits with the character.

  9. David Tennant *IS* the Riddler… (But hell, I’d kill to see any Christopher Nolan film that contains Tennant.)

  12. David Tennant would be absolutely perfect for the role but I know that he won’t be cast, so my money would be on Gordon-Levitt. I don’t think he’s too young. He looks older in the Inception trailers and Nolan would be looking for a more subtle star (like Heath Ledger was) than Depp. Depp plays weird all the time and Gordon-Levitt plays more normal characters and that would bring the realistic POV to the movie. I support Gordon-Levitt.

  13. The Riddler is just a bad idea, period. Wish we could have seen a newer criminal, one that we haven’t seen in films or TV yet. Personally I think this is going to suck supreme.

  15. I have faith in Nolan, he knows best. Just when you think he’s wrong, he’s right. If it’s Gordon-Levitt, Nolan knows something the audience hasn’t factored. I think Depp might play him too wacky, after watching “Sherlock Holmes” even Jude Law is a good possibility. Bettany is a good choice, but of course it all depends on his take of the character. I’m also a big Dr. Who fan, so Tennant is a favorite. But he’s too obvious a choice and that’s going to factor big , I believe, in the final casting of the villains (I predict two, at least).

  17. Wait a minute, It just came to me. Paul Bettany would make a good Riddler, but a GREAT Dr. Hank Pym aka Ant-Man aka Giant-Man aka Yellowjacket (& Ultron’s baby daddy)!

  18. wow ppl cmon there will be no joker in batman 3 chris nolan already said and also he would never choose johnny deep for the riddler its most likely gonna be joseph witch is perfect

  19. David Tennant would be the perfect Riddler. I can’t think of any other actor that would do it like he could. JGL is soooo young and looks sooo much like Heath Ledger that he couldn’t possibly pull off the Riddler. Now bringing back the Joker JGL all the way but Tennant was born to play the Riddler and already said he would love to do it. Johnny Depp is incredible no questions asked but he looks nothing like the Riddler. Daivd Tennant is the Riddler!

  20. I think that Nicholis Cage would be perfect for the riddler.
    Kate Beckinsale as Catwoman.
