Yet another casting has been announced by Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures for their much-buzzed and immediate reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. This time around, it’s been revealed who will be playing the crucial villain role.
Sony announced that Rhys Ifans will be their villain in the new movie, facing off against Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield), and his love interest Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). The only thing about the announcement is that the studio has decided to keep exactly who Ifans will be playing a big secret. This should go over well with fans who are dying to know who the big baddie in this new take on the Marvel comic book superhero would be.
Ifans is best known for his quirky supporting roles. He first stood out to most as the often oblivious slob and Hugh Grant flatmate in the romantic comedy, Notting Hill. Since then he’s stood out in films like The Replacements, Little Nicky, Human Nature, and Danny Deckchair. More recently, he’s appeared in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, The Informers, and The Boat That Rocked, and Greenberg. Next up, he’s set to play Luna Lovegood’s father, Xenophilius Lovegood, in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.
Speaking on the announcement, Columbia president Matt Tolmach said “We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans. After seeing his performance in our upcoming film Anonymous, we’re in awe of his talent and think he’s the perfect choice to take on this role.”
(500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb is helming the project, and on the Ifans casting, he added “What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.”
So, faithful Spider-Man fans, now knowing who will play the villain will be played by, who would be the perfect villain for Rhys Ifans to play? I’m a big fan of the actor and am so happy to see him grab this role, no matter who he plays, but there has to be a fan favorite.

I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest The Jackal

The Lizard seems likely, it would fit with the period they’re setting this in and it adds another great hurdle for Parker to overcome.

Anyone else besides me thinks this is going to suck. Looks like its going to be right up there with Punisher: War Zone

Gonna go out on a limb (pun intended) and say Lizard was confirmed for the non-existent Spider-Man 4 anyways. Surely they had concept art mocked up.

That comment was meant for the “Confirmed” article, but it doesn’t matter now.
