It’s been expected for quite some time now that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be re-joining his Inception director, Christopher Nolan, when production began on his third chapter in the Batman franchise, titled The Dark Knight Rises.
Now comes word that the actor is in fact in talks to join the cast, which of course features Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne along with new additions Anne Hathaway, who will be playing the latest Catwoman, and Tom Hardy, who after being left a mystery for a while was revealed to be playing Bane.
While Gordon-Levitt is only technically “in talks” at the moment, Deadline hears that he’s fully expected to be there when the movie starts filming in the spring. And because most have assumed he’d be in it in some role or another, this is pretty much a done deal.
But who will Mr. Gordon-Levitt be playing? That, my friends, is the all-crucial question…and at the moment, it’s being kept a secret.
As far as rumors go, many have thought that the young actor would be good for the villain, The Riddler. Many others have thought that if Nolan was going to go the ballsy route and bring back The Joker, that Gordon-Levitt might be the only one fitting enough to come even close to doing what Heath Ledger did, but again, that’d be majorly risky. Nolan has also said that neither the Joker or the Riddler would be in the third movie.
Since it appears my hopes and dreams of seeing Paul Bettany play Riddler are now extinct, Gordon-Levitt would obviously be a decent fit. But who do you want to see the actor play, Riddler, Joker, or someone completely different?
nightwing/robin perhaps?

Josh, Nolan has said Robin hasn’t even been born in his version of Batman, so that rules Robin out. I’m wondering if he’s going to do what Anthony Michael Hall did: a supporting role that’s small (maybe a bit bigger than that though).

I’d love to see Hush, though we’ve got the main baddies already. As a bit part, I wouldn’t mind Gordon-Levitt as Mr Zsasz.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Heath Ledger were both in “10 Things I Hate About You”. Whenever I watch it, I think it was strange casting because the two look like they could be brothers, but their characters in the movie are no relation.

@ Thrasher Mr. Zsasz made a bit apearence in Batman Begins. I don’t like when movies overstuff villains, but I hate to see a sidekick too. I have no problems with recasting joker, as unfortunate as Ledger’s passing was, it should not impede creative storytelling abilities. Although Baine is an interesting choice, I am unsure how it will translate onto screen.

this is what i think, my opinion though..we all know that bane breaks batmans back, but before he can kill him the joker kills bane. soo you never know, nolan is very cunning and brilliant. so you never know what he has up his sleeve

this is gonna be beautiful. I have a whole slew of theories of what might take place now the JGL is in the picture. Oh Man i’m super syked! Sooo.. since this is the last installment of the Nolan/Batman era, im’ma go out on a limb here and say Levitt plays like a pseudo Robin type of character and is the heir apparent to take over as the new caped crusader because remember Batman is wanted by both his enemies and the Law so, he may not make it out alive. But thats just one extreme and is not to be taken seriously. Just let the imaginative juices flow man! Still think the movie should of been called “CAPED CRUSADER”

@ ErsName: Great minds think alike. Prior to reading your post, I had thought that Nolan could skip right over Robin/Dick Grayson and have JGL as a Nightwing-type character (with or without a named civilian identity). Since the super-criminals are coming out of the woodwork because of Bats, why not another “cape” or two being inspired to rooftop hop?

I’m digging the idea of a Nightwing-style character, another cape to help out with the bad guys. JGL has the right look and attitude, but he’s gonna have to buff up a little. We definitely don’t need more villains in this. And we don’t need Bane! I cannot think of a less interesting character in comics less deserving of being in a feature film, let alone two (although, I can barely count that abomination as a “film”)
Still trying to figure out how the folks at DC ever let such a stupid character just come out of nowhere, with no established back-story, and nearly kill Batman. Guess it was no different with Superman/Doomsday. But I digress…
