On Monday, DC Comics announced the all-new origin and costume for The Man of Steel. Get ready folks, because we’re in store for an angry comments section. Why? Just wait and see.

Action Comics #1 (cover shown below) will be written by my favorite writer Grant Morrison with art duties from Rags Morales, artist of the amazingly popular Identity Crisis. And in the hands of anyone else, I’d be worried, but I suspect plenty of you will still be worried, if not furious.

So, let’s get to it.

Yep, that’s his costume before he changes into the ultra-armored version that we’ve seen prior.

In Morrison’s Action Comics, we’ll see the above costume on a Superman who has just arrived in Metropolis. A Superman who is not-so-Super. He’s able to leap tall buildings, but has not yet perfected his flight ability. He’s still an alien from Krypton, and his home planet has still been destroyed, but his adopted parents, Ma and Pa Kent, are dead. He’s inexperienced and brooding, and stuck in a city that doesn’t trust their first superhero. He’s all alone and more Kal-El than Clark Kent.

The Action story takes place in Superman’s early days, while George Perez and Jesus Merino‘s Superman takes place in the present time in DC Comics continuity. But don’t relax just yet, there are changes here, too. To all the ‘shippers out there, Clark Kent is single and has never been married while Lois Lane is not. Lois is dating a different fellow Daily Planet employee and is in a different position than intrepid girl reporter.

This all sounds very much like Smallville or the rumored plot elements of 2012’s Man of Steel. If it is, the books should be far more accessible to new readers from other mediums, but let’s be honest with each other. Superman was the first superhero. His look and origin are iconic. But recently, in comics and film, nothing has seemed to stick with any sort of wide audience. So, I understand why they’re making these changes, but it certainly hurts to see the Last Son of Krypton to be turned into this far from iconic shadow of his former self.

Again, I’d worry if I wasn’t such a Morrison fan and didn’t know about his undying love for superheroes and The Man of Tomorrow, and I’m not even that big of a Superman fan.
