Week of Geek: SDCC 2011 Coverage - San Diego Comic Con

SDCC 2011: Twilight Breaking Dawn, part 1 panel: Robert Pattinson

Most people that don’t attend Comic-Con in San Diego probably won’t know this, but when any film in the Twilight franchise has a presence at the Con, the fans come out in droves. And not only do they show up, they show up days in advance and camp out on the line to get into Hall H, the 6,500-seater where most movie studios bring their latest offerings.

This year, Summit Entertainment is promoting The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, so of course, a campsite was erected and eager fans awaited their chance to see the film’s stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, as well as exclusive footage from the upcoming film.

Those devoted fans were rewarded with said exclusive footage, which you can read a description of here below (we also have tons of pics of the stars from the panel). The footage showed Bella and Edward arriving to their honeymoon destination, so we got to see a shirtless Edward and a disrobing Bella, and some other stuff. There was also a scene that wasn’t in the books of Jacob confronting his former tribe members after aligning with the Cullen vampire clan.

Midway through the panel, more actors were brought out: Julia Jones (Leah Clearwater), Elizabeth Reaser (Emse Cullen), Nikki Reed (Rosalie Cullen), and Ashley Green (Alice Cullen). One fan asked Green if the movies would be showing any of Alice’s backstory, the way previous films did for Jasper and Rosalie, specifically if James and the insane asylum would be in the movie. Green said that unfortunately none of that will end up in the films.

During the Q&A session, fans got to ask the stars some deep questions like, “What was your favorite scene from the movie”?,” “What was your favorite movie of the saga?,” and of course, the obligatory “What’s it like to work with so and so, who is so hot?” Upon hearing that last question, Stewart said, “It’s so weird that we’re all so hot,” and then implored the fans to finally put an end to asking that question.

One fan waited on the Q&A line to tell Pattinson that she was very impressed with the actor’s back muscles as seen in the film’s trailer, stating, “I think I speak for everyone when I say ‘nom nom nom.'”

Another fan asked Taylor Lautner how he liked filming his action scenes, to which he responded that most of his action sequences are actually done by the CGI wolf, although he did say SPOILER “I get a nice punch from Edward after I imprint on his daughter.” Of his CGI counterpart, the young actor said, “I’m super jealous of my CGI wolf, although he’s cute and fluffy.”

At some point, a very tiny little girl came up to the mic to adorably ask Robert Pattinson, “Rob, do you like having the baby with Bella?”

Speaking of “the baby,” everyone wanted to know about the infamous birthing scene, which Stewart said took two days to shoot. The actress, who’s never given birth in real life, gave a vivid description of what it was like to act like she was birthing a vampire baby, while choking on the blood she was drinking to survive and then have venom coursing through her veins after holding her baby. Pattinson said he really likes this scene because Edward is frail at that moment and helpless.

Other areas covered were filming the honeymoon in Brazil, where, Pattinson explained, it was beautiful as expected on their first day there, but that it soon turned into rainy, hurricane weather. “Instead of making love on the beach, we were playing board games,” the actor said [yes, lots of squealing audience members]. “It was like a honeymoon in England.”

Of course, there’s the whole wedding sequence, which Stewart said she’s been “ramping up to shoot that scene for four years.” She said when she was on set in her wedding gown, she was locked away from everyone with lots of security around. The actress also said that she listened to certain songs to get pumped for emotional scenes and that she repeatedly listened to the Band of Horses song “Annabel” to help her get ready for the wedding scene.

Regarding music having to do with the film, director Bill Condon, who was also at the panel, said there will be 15 or songs for the movie soundtrack, but didn’t want to reveal any of the bands yet, since they haven’t finalized all of the deals at this time.

Footage Description

HONEYMOON SCENE

Bella and Edward arrive to their honeymoon destination. Bella is carrying her shoes as they walk into the house. Edward picks up his new wife and carries her into house, where we see how nice it is there. Edward asks Bella if she wants to take a look around, and she does. Bella goes to the bedroom and looks at the bed. Edward comes in behind her; he’s carrying their luggage. They smile at each other. “You tired?,” Edward asks her, and she nods no. “Do you want to go for a swim,” he inquires next. “Yeah, that sounds nice. But I could use a few human minutes.” He kisses her forehead, and says “Don’t take too long, Mrs. Cullen”. Edward opens the double doors that lead out to the beach. He walks off in the moonlit night, taking off his shirt as he approaches the water. [Audience screams.] Bella goes to bathroom and it turns into a musical montage of her brushing teeth, combing hair, washing her hands, taking off her engagement ring to wash up, shaving her legs, and trying to pick out a bra and lingerie. Then we see her in a towel, she’s on the floor a bit nervous. She then walks about onto the beach wearing just the towel and sees Edward swimming in the water (presumably naked). Bella takes off towel and heads towards the water.

JACOB SCENE

Jacob is at the Cullen home with Carlisle and Esme and he’s holding a bag of blood that Bella will need in order to survive. They talk about how Carlisle will be slaughtered by Sam, the head of Jacob’s wolf pack. Jacob is surprised that The Cullens would risk their lives for Bella. Jacob says he can see how much they care for her and how they really are a family, just like the one he was born into. Jacob says he knows what he has to do. Cut to Jacob in the woods. Leah and Seth come there to warn him, and then his other wolf brothers arrive (Paul and others, but not Sam). Jacob is no longer part of their pack, since he’s aligned now with the vampires to protect Bella, and his wolf brothers are mad at him for choosing the Cullens over his tribe. They taunt him about his “new family.” Jacob wants Sam to take back Leah and Seth into the tribe. Jacob starts talking about how when the moment comes, he’ll be the one to destroy them. “I’m the only one who can,” Jacob said. “They trust me.”
