Transformers

It’s a popular way to save some money, knocking two movies out in one long grueling shoot, and it’s something that’s now being considered for Transformers 4 and Transformers 5.

Hasbro, the toy company behind the Transformers brand, sees massive dollar signs with the third movie in the film franchise, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, recently pulling in over $1 billion worldwide, as any business would. So, as was just reported, they’re now in “active discussions” with Paramount Pictures, director Michael Bay, and producer Steven Spielberg to figure out what the next step for the franchise will be, and now the added possibility of producing two films in one shot.

Rest easy, GI Joe fans, you CAN go home again. At least, as far as the GI Joe comics are concerned. I really believe IDW should get some kind of special recognition for bringing BACK 20-year-old continuity in a time in comics where continuity barely holds up from one issue to the next.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #171 might frustrate some newer or younger comics readers, simply for the fact that this IS a continuation of a 20-year-old series and it’s written like it. Storytelling in comics is a lot different now than it was then. What I love about this comic is that it IS written as an old school comic. You get a brief recap within the first few story pages, but other than that, author Larry Hama assumes that you’ve read previous issues and know what’s going on, and it doesn’t hurt the book one bit.

OK, I’ll be honest with you, my audience. This is by FAR the hardest review that I’ve had to write for Geeks of Doom to date, for two simple reasons. One, admittedly, my knowledge of the Legion of Super-Heroes is somewhat limited. And two, the way this comic is written, it’s going to be almost impossible for me not to go into spoiler territory. But, I’ll do my best.

First, my hat’s off to writer Chris Roberson. He’s done a great job of taking two mega popular franchises and made them blend seamlessly into one cohesive, fast-paced, entertaining story.
