NYCC 2012: James Wan's The Conjuring

The Conjuring, a prospective cinematic scarefest etched in the same vein as The Amityville Horror, made the panel rounds at the IGN Theater on Saturday during this year’s New York Comic-Con.

The story, which is based on true events, focuses on a duo of paranormal investigators set to give aid to a family terrorized by a dark, ominous presence in a farmhouse squarely planted miles from anyone else. The investigators, held in the threshold of the demonic energy manifesting itself in the farmhouse, which turns out to be a witch, find themselves in the thick of what is sure to be one of the most challenging and difficult cases they have ever had to endure.

Moderated by the always hilarious and gregarious Chris Hardwick and sporting a shirt with an embroidered NASA logo (!), the panel consisted of director James Wan (Saw, Insidious) – who explained about the film’s narrative – and stars Lili Taylor, Ron Livingston, and Patrick Wilson.

NYCC 2012 Carrie Remake

Carrie, the Stephen King novel which was originally made into a film directed by Brian De Palma in 1976, is being remade for a Spring 2013 release next year and had a panel on Saturday at the IGN Theater at New York Comic-Con.

The original stands as a cult classic and is the ultimate revenge of the nerd story in which a red-headed shy, wallflower teenager, imbued with telekinesis, throws her wrath of vengeance and revenge on the residents of small town in which she lives who have always shunned and mocked her.

The new version finds Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass, Let Me In) in the role of Carrie White, originally played by Sissy Spacek. Moretz, along with celebrated actress Julianne Moore stepping into the role perfected by Piper Laurie in the first film as Carrie’s chillingly disturbed mother, director Kimberly Peirce, and producer Kevin Misher made up the panel at NYCC at the Jacob Javits Center in midtown Manhattan.

NYCC 2012 Bruce Campbell Evil Dead Remake Panel

Evil Dead, one of the greatest contemporary horror franchises of all time, gets a reboot in the guise of a remake which is set to debut in theaters in the Spring of 2013. The panel for the film at New York Comic-Con on Saturday was without a doubt one of the highlights of the day, thanks to the appearance of the original portrayer of Ash, the wacky, cartoony, yet tough and gruff protagonist in the original trilogy of Evil Dead films, the one and only square-jawed Bruce Campbell.

Director Fede Alvarez (handpicked to helm the remake by the original director Sam Raimi), Jane Levy who plays a female version of the Ash character named Mia, and Campbell made up the panel. Campbell came out to the first standing ovation of the day. Decked in a cherry red suit and exhibiting every ounce of his goofy, wonderfully distinguished personality and graying at the temples, Campbell spoke of the crowds’ fetish with the original films and how the remake will be amazingly as good as the first trilogy. Campbell owned the room, as the witty, off-kilter style he’s best known for shone through like a beacon in the hall.

The Evil Dead

During this weekend’s New York Comic-Con, the first image from the upcoming Evil Dead remake was revealed. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to snap a photo of the new image, which was projected onto two large screens at the film’s panel at the convention center’s IGN Theater, as we were in the press photo area snapping pics of the panel members, including the awesome Bruce Campbell.

But, EW was given the exclusive for the online premiere of the photo, so you can check out their watermarked image here below. What do you think of this first image? According to EW, it’s of star Jane Levy in full Deadite regalia. I’m not sure, but I think someone’s in my fruit cellar.

Check back soon for our full coverage, including photos and footage description, of the New York Comic-Con Evil Dead remake panel. [Update, here’s our coverage: NYCC 2012: Bruce Campbell Dominates “˜Evil Dead’ Remake Panel.]
