When you think of Kevin James, you think of a lot of simple jokes, physical comedy, and slapstick. But the last thing you would think that would come to mind is inspiration.
Could it be, that I may find a hint of an uplifting story in a Kevin James movie? That appears to be the case with his new MMA fighter-based flick Here Comes the Boom.
Check out the trailer below.
Now take my newly found empathy towards James’ film with a grain of salt. I’ve only watched one film on his resume, and that was something I have always regretted. However, with Here Comes the Boom, there is a chance that I could change my opinion on James. Not only because it’s based on MMA fighting – I’ve seen MMA fights and have a family member who is an avid MMA fighter – but there is an uplifting story behind it.
Is it anything like The Fighter? No, of course not. Kevin James is in the film for Pete’s sake. But, unlike most of James’ films, there are believable character motivations, even though it’s something that we’ve seen plenty of times. So if this is indeed the direction that James is taking, I hope he stays the course.
The film is directed by Frank Coraci (The Waterboy), and co-stars Salma Hayek and Henry Winkler. Thanks to Fandango for the trailer.
Columbia Pictures is set to release Here Comes the Boom on October 12.
The trailer makes it look watchable. No fantastic story twists or cinematic innovation can be expected, but I think I’ll probably give it a shot, when it comes out.Â

Well…it’s not “The Zookeeper”! My girlfriend is a Teacher so I might even see this one in a movie theater.
