Issues:
JSA Liberty Files: The Whistling Skull #1 (DC Comics – $2.99): Hey, look at that, a DC book I’m excited about. It’s a Christmas miracle! But seriously, I am looking forward to this for a couple of reasons. One is that I love the Justice Society thanks to the James Robinson/Geoff Johns/David Goyer run. The writing team took the older characters of the DC universe and injected new life into them by bringing in a host of younger characters. The mix of young and old made for some great moments, and the whole writing team knew how to get the most out of an ever-increasing cast. With this miniseries, writer B. Clay Moore takes the team and focuses on their exploits in World War II as the heroes try to solve a mystery. Moore is no stranger to mysteries, thanks to his Image series Hawaiian Dick (which is very good and which you should check out) so I think that aspect of the series will be good. The real reason I’m excited to read this series though is the art by Tony Harris. It’s been a while since Harris (Starman, Ex Machina) has done interior art and Harris is an amazing artist, so this series is a slam dunk.
Avengers #2 (Marvel Comics – $3.99): Did you read the first issue? Wow. That is all I can say. I had high hopes for Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers series, and those expectations were met and exceeded. Hickman has the big idea to make all the heroes in the Marvel U an Avenger, due to a massive threat that Captain America sees coming. Cap knows that the Earth is going to need every hero in order to survive, so he is building an army. Even after one issue, you can see Hickman’s unique voice at work in the series. Hickman has been able to take his personal style and married it perfectly to the Marvel universe in a way that many other writers have tried and failed to do. It doesn’t hurt to have Jerome Opena on art, turning in his usual high standard of art. I’m so happy that the first issue worked so well and I can’t wait to read the next chapter.
MacGyver Fugitive Gauntlet #3 (Image Comics – $3.50): Here is your monthly reminder that a new issue of the greatest comic book in comic book history is out. Consider yourself served.
Locke & Key: Omega #2 (IDW Publishing – $3.99): The other day, I was lamenting that it’s a shame that Locke & Key doesn’t come out every week, while maintaining the same standards of excellence. Then I was reminded that this may be asking a bit much. Hey, a man can dream right? I loved the first issue of this final miniseries in the Locke & Key saga. It was touching and scary in all the right ways and it told me that this series is going to end on the highest of highs. I just want to know how Dodge gets what’s coming to him and what will happen to the Locke kids. Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez have created a modern masterpiece, and if you still haven’t read the series yet, you better buy the first trade with your Christmas money. I understand that I can’t get a new issue every week, so I’ll just settle for a great issue every time Locke & Key comes out.
