DC and Warner Bros. are desperate to get their Justice League into theaters by their projected release date of summer 2015, though so far the only confirmed details on the project is the studio’s assigning Will Beall (Gangster Squad) to write the script. The rest has been a riot of rampant speculation. Major filmmakers from Ben Affleck to Lana and Andy Wachowski have been linked to the director’s chair, but no one has been hired for the job yet. Darkseid has been rumored to be the film’s big bad cosmic villain.
As for which DC Comics superheroes will be part of 2015’s occupants of the Hall of Justice, so far it is a given that Superman and Batman will be leading the charge into whatever large-scale battle the filmmakers pit them against. The upcoming Man of Steel is said to play heavily into the build-up to Justice League with Batman possibly making a post-credits cameo, if those rumors turn out to be true. Besides those likely character choices, the remaining members of the team – and how many there will be – are still up in the air. But that looks to be changing.
According to El Mayimbe at Latino Review it looks like the Justice League team roster has been finalized…
As of this morning, they are STILL looking for a director. In the meantime, according to sources, the final cinematic Justice League roster will consist of five core members featuring:
1) Superman
2) Batman
3) Green Lantern
4) Wonder Woman
5) The Flash
The LR article also suggests that Martian Manhunter and Aquaman may also make brief appearances as second string back-up for the principal team members, with Hawkman tipped for an even briefer cameo if it comes to pass.
So this is not the most surprising list, though I guess it is a very good thing the roster is being kept as low as possible. Unlike The Avengers, Justice League will not have the benefit of being preceded by solo establishing the other heroes on the team, Man of Steel notwithstanding. Batman does not really need much of an introduction because thanks to the Christopher Nolan Bat-films he is the most established box office draw of the entire ensemble. The obvious challenge before whoever is tasked with directing this big and costly venture is building up viewer interest in the non-Kryptonian, non-Gothamite teammates. Since the potential makers of Justice League will also lack the benefit of time to achieve that end if the threat the League will be facing is as huge as rumored.
Casting has always been one of the most crucial ingredients in making an effective and memorable movie. For this grandiose superhero escapade it looks likely to the most important.
