The World's End Header

Today sees the North American release of Edgar Wright‘s The World’s End, the final installment of his Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, which began in 2004 with Shaun of the Dead and continued in 2007 with Hot Fuzz (see our review here). The World’s End tells the tale of five friends who as teenagers attempted an epic pub crawl together, but never made it to the final establishment on their list, The World’s End. The friends eventually drift apart and move away, becoming family men with responsibilities and careers, except for Gary (Simon Pegg), who convinces the group to reconvene some 20 years later for another attempt at “The Golden Mile” drinking marathon. But during their one night/twelve pubs adventure, where each person must drink at least one pint per location, the old friends realize that something is amiss in their hometown of Newton Haven, and that there’s more to this quest than just reuniting and reconciling – the world itself is in danger!

Earlier this month, I received some cool swag in the mail from Focus Features that included a limited edition World’s End-inspired The Golden Mile T-Shirt, along with the recently released Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz Double Feature Blu-ray. Then, earlier this week, there were two more deliveries containing twelve pub glasses, each with the name and logo of one of the pubs along “The Golden Mile,” along with a different quote from the film. A note from the studio says there’s even more items to come soon.

Above is a photo I took of the shirt, the blu-ray, and six of the glasses, along with the box the glasses came in. My four cats were being unruly while I was setting up the shot and no one was home to run security, so I feared putting out all twelve glasses under these conditions. I can tell you this: 1) I LOVE IT!; 2) I love glasses like these; 3) no one is allowed to drink from these or even touch these but me (sorry family!); and 4) while I love the swag and feel all giddy about it, I didn’t need any of it to get me excited for The World’s End. I love the first two Cornetto films, with Hot Fuzz being one of my favorite movies ever, so of course I was eagerly anticipating the final installment. Plus, at this point, anything that Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg do, whether together or not, will get my undivided attention, as they are hugely talented and hilarious.

So there you have it, another installment of Doom Deliveries. I’ll update this post if/when more World’s End goodies arrive.

The Worlds End: The First Post and The Famous Cock pub glasses

By the way, although the films when watched together do not tell one continuous tale with the same characters, what makes these movies a trilogy, according to Pegg, are the common themes of growing up, becoming mature, and perpetual adolescence. There’s also many elements that tie the movies together, including the recasting of actors, in-jokes, gags, nods, and, of course, the ice cream treat Cornetto.

Update 8/23/2013 at 5pm: Another package has arrived, this time it was delivered by messenger! It’s a wooden beer caddy with bottle opener on the side; inside are six brands of beer in bottles. Check out the photo here below:

  2. I went and saw the Trilogy in the theater last night – one lucky fan won the pint glasses while everyone else got a mini poster with the tavern logos.

I burn with jealousy! You got some amazingly awesome stuff!
