The GoD List banner

Each and every week, I, “The Famous Cock” Henchman21, and “The Mermaid” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of August 28, 2013. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Since we took last week off, we’re here to drop an extra-sized version of the list this time. Sadly, the list contains one series that is nearly ending, and one series that is going to be significantly changing due to a switch in the creative team. But never fear, we’ve got plenty of other brilliant series to point you towards, including one issue that is a great starting point for one of my favorite titles. So, no time to sleep around, it’s time to wake up to The GoD List!

FF #11

FF #11 (Marvel Comics – $2.99) Sad times for me as this is going to be the last issue that Matt Fraction will be working on, as he takes his leave of both Fantastic Four titles to focus on Hawkeye and his upcoming series, Inhumanity. This bums me out because I loved what Fraction was doing on FF, building off of the ideas laid down by Jonathan Hickman during the series first run. Fraction took the idea of a school for the children of any number of Fantastic Four side characters and added his own oddball sensibilities into the mix. He also found a way to make great use of characters like Scott Lang (Ant-Man II) and She-Hulk, and every character in the expansive cast got their own moments. It’s just a shame to see him leave because he was doing some awesome work and I always want awesome comics in my life. I’ll stick around on the series for a while, mostly for the art of Mike Allred, but also to see what new writer Lee Allred (Mike’s brother) does with the series. Hopefully he can maintain the tone of the series and pay off on the subplots that Fraction set up.

Skullkickers #24 (Image Comics – $3.50) Skullkickers is in that rare breed of series that I have to bring up every time a new issue is released, but this issue in particular is a good entry point for new readers as it is another Tavern Tales issues. Skullkickers has done a couple of these issues before, where they will take various special creative teams andlet them tell short stories set in the world. This issue has guest work from Ron Marz, Stjepan Sejic, Adam Warren, Todd Dezago, Tom Raney, as well as a story by regular series writer Jim Zub and regular artist Edwin Huang. As with other Tavern Tales issues, this is a great introduction to the series and gives new readers a chance to see what the series is all about while giving those who are already following the series a month to see what other creators can do with these characters. If you’ve heard me talk about this series before but haven’t picked it up before, then don’t miss this issue.

American Vampire Anthology #1 (DC/Vertigo Comics – $7.99) Speaking of anthology titles, here is another issue with a great collection of creators on a series that you don’t normally see them on. This issue also looks to placate readers while the main series is on hiatus, which is a good thing because it’s been too long since an issue of American Vampire came out. Here’s the creator rundown: On writing chores we’ve got series creator Scott Snyder, as well as Jeff Lemire, Greg Rucka, Gail Simone, Gabriel Ba, and Fabio Moon. On art, we get new work from Becky Cloonan, Rafael Albuquerque, Francesco Francavilla, Declan Shalvey, and the aforementioned Lemire, Ba, and Moon (presumably drawing the stories they wrote). You line up that many talented creators, and I don’t care how much you’re charging me, I will pay it, and pay it gladly. I just want to see what stories these fine folk are going to give us, because it is sure to be fantastic.

Gambit #16 (Marvel Comics – $2.99) Ah, the penultimate issue. I’ll pour out one for one of my favorite series. I know it wasn’t necessarily the best series, but it was fun, dammit, and that’s what I want in my comics. Ah well, it’s not like I expected this series to last very long even before it launched, and I’ll take joy in the seventeen issues I did get to see. I’ll lament the loss even more next month. Sadly, it is the end for Journey into Mystery with issue #655, another series that never got the due it deserved.

Young Avengers #9 (Marvel Comics – $2.99) If you asked me to assemble a list of the best comics I’m reading right now, Young Avengers would have to be at the top of the list. Keiron Gillen and Jaime McKelvie have done what I wasn’t sure was possible, which was to take the Young Avengers characters created by Allan Heinberg and gorgeously drawn by Jim Cheung and make the book their own while not getting away from the core of the characters. This book has style oozing from every panel, both in the art and in the words and even in the way the book is designed. I’m a goofy middle aged guy and this book makes me feel young again. How many other books can you say that about?
