Vin Diesel knows a thing or two about one-liners. But his role as Groot in James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy pretty much takes the cake. For those that don’t know, Groot is capable of saying only one line: “I Am Groot.” That’s it. So for Diesel to make it captivating, he would have to record hours and hours of saying “I Am Groot,” in many different tones.
While he admits there isn’t much to a character that can only say one line, he will make the best of it by trying to make it his own. He also posted a video of himself practicing with some motion capture tools that will help him become Groot. Hit the jump to see it.
This reveal does come at weird time though. Gunn had just announced that he completed principle photography for Guardians this past weekend, and Diesel started shooting Fast & Furious 7 early this month. So the chemistry between the characters may be a bit off. But considering Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) will be completely CG, and the other a humanoid tree that can only say “I Am Groot,” how much chemistry can there really be?
Here is what Diesel had to say about Groot:
“My father taught me there are no small roles, only small actors. I have one line in the movie, but that doesn’t mean anything. I’m still going to make it the best thing I possibly can. Even if it means taking Andy Serkis to a whole other level, which is what we wanna do with our motion capture.”
However, the actor did admit he was brought in for bigger things, like the merging of the brands in 2016. Of course we don’t really know what that means, but many have surmised that it will bring in properties like Fox’s X-Men and Fantastic Four into the fold. We may have to hold out on Spider-Man though as Sony does plan to release The Amazing Spider-Man 4 in 2018. This of course is all just speculation.
For now, let’s just enjoy watching imagining Diesel walking like a tree in the video below.
Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Benicio del Toro, and Djimon Hounsou. Marvel Studios will release the film on August 1, 2014.
