Columbia Pictures
Rated R | 132 Minutes
Release Date: December 20, 2013
“Some of this actually happened.” With steely concentration, Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) glues a toupée to the top of his head. Once the swatch of synthetic hair is in place, he meticulously combs the thinning hair on his temples over and around it. To complete the masterful act of male grooming, Irving blasts his new ‘do with industrial-strength hairspray. This is the opening sequence of American Hustle, the latest film by director David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook). The film is loosely based on the 1978 ABSCAM scandal, a series of FBI operations designed to uncover corrupt government officials. Standing there in front of the mirror, sporting a serious paunch and a colorful ascot, Irving could be mistaken for Roy Munson, Woody Harrelson’s character from Kingpin: a sad, semi-pathetic hustler chasing the American dream. With the help of his partner and lover, Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams), Irving sells art forgeries and participates in investment schemes.

But as dawn rises on Los Angeles, sisters Regina (Catherine Mary Stewart) and Samantha (Kelli Maroney) discover that the comet’s tail has literally vaporized almost the entire human population. And those that were exposed to the comet but lived have been mutated into zombies who require uncontaminated human blood in order to keep living. Now, Regina and Samantha, who are learning to adapt to the apocalypse via the one thing valley girls do best – heading to the mall for a shopping spree – must avoid zombies, armed gangs of stock boys and a team of scientists who survived via an underground bunker if they expect to live another night! Night of the Comet makes its Blu-ray debut here and brings with it all the nostalgic glory the cult favorite has to offer. The movie, originally released in 1984, is a hodgepodge of light science-fiction and horror heavily sprinkled with charming comedy-stylings. Some what of an inevitability considering the precarious situation that Universal Pictures is in now. On one hand, the studio can scrap the entire film and have screenwriter Chris Morgan rewrite the Fast & Furious 7 script since Paul Walker tragically died in an accident last week. On the other hand, the studio could have Morgan revise it to give Walker’s Brian O’Connor character the proper send off, giving us one more chance to see the actor in one of his final performances – which is what fans want. But the one thing on Universal’s mind is how they can approach this film and honor the memory of Walker. Universal does seem content on salvaging whatever footage can be used, since the film was nearly complete before the actor’s untimely death, and if they are satisfied with Morgan’s results, they can resume production as early as January. But that is a big if.
