SDCC 2013: Breaking Bad panel: Aaron Paul

Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman, half of the meth-making team in the AMC drama Breaking Bad, is reportedly in serious talks to appear in the upcoming spinoff Better Call Saul, according to Rolling Stone.

Paul revealed the news while promoting his action film Need For Speed, saying that “Anything Vince is involved with, I’m there,” referring to Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, who is also working on the spinoff.

Better Call Saul, which Gilligan and showrunner Peter Gould have said will be 75% comedy and 25% drama, will serve as a prequel to Breaking Bad. The series will center on everyone’s favorite strip mall lawyer, Saul Goodman, as he makes a name for himself with the most unsavory of clients. Bob Odenkirk will reprise his role as the title character, with Jonathan Banks returning as Mike Ehrmantraut. Since the announcement of this prequel-spinoff, several Breaking Bad actors have expressed interest in reprising their roles. Back in October, Gilligan talked said, “Personally, I’d have a hard time resisting putting all these guys in for a cameo or two every now and then.”

If Paul does join the cast, we’d see some of Jesse Pinkman’s early days, which the actor referred to as Jesse’s “lighter days”:

And the idea of jumping into the skin of Jesse Pinkman again in his lighter days “” because it’s all a prequel “” it would be fun.”

With Paul jumping on board, could the inclusion of Bryan Cranston’s Walter White be close behind? There’s nothing confirmed as of now, but there is still room to write Walt into show, even though Better Call Saul deals with Saul’s life before he met Walt — if you recall, Walt was Jesse’s teacher in high school. Also, there could always be “flash-forwards” that reveal to the audience alternate takes on events from Breaking Bad.

Better Call Saul will beginning airing in November 2014 on AMC, with Netflix set to air each episode a few days later.
