Daniel Radcliffe Horns movie

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe made his San Diego Comic-Con debut today at the convention center’s massive Hall H auditorium for the panel for his upcoming film, Horns, based on the Joe Hill novel. Attendees got to see the U.S. premiere of the trailer, as well as a clip from the movie (footage description here below).

Radcliffe turned 25 two days ago, so the huge crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to him. He was joined on the panel with Joe Hill and director Alexandre Aja, who Radcliffe said weaved the horror and humor elements from the book perfectly for the film.

In the movie, Radcliffe plays Ig, who is accused of raping and killing his girlfriend, Mary (played by Juno Temple). While he’s facing the hatred from his fellow townspeople, who believe he’s guilty regardless of the evidence, Ig one day wakes up with a pair of horns on his head. The horns compel anyone Ig encounters to tell the truth and act on their impulses. As the story continues, Ig struggles to find Mary’s real killer and his character begins to change as well.

The U.S. trailer was premiered at the panel. The footage begins showing Ig and Mary together in love, but that soon changes when it’s obvious something terrible has happened to Mary. Ig is blamed for Mary’s murders and the people in town think he’s guilty; they harass him and people are prompted to picket. Soon after, Ig walks up with horns on his head, which is obviously a major shock. He visits a doctor about it, but that doesn’t help. Soon after, we see the tiny snubs have grown and now look similar to ram’s horns on a smaller scale. Everyone Ig encounters begins to act strangely, thanks to the horns. There’s quick cuts showing Ig and Mary together, snakes congregating to Ig, the townspeople interacting with Ig, TV reporters hounding Ig for a scoop (more on this in the clip that was shown), and Ig arguing with his best friend.

The trailer doesn’t seem to really give off the same vibe as the book did, but then a clip was shown that seems to accurately portray what we can really expect from the film. TV news vans follow Ig in his car; when Ig gets out of the car, the reporters with microphones chase after him, one of which is a female reporter that begs him for a scoop in hopes that it will help her career enough to leave the local new station. Frustrated by the reports, Ig tells them that they should beat the shit out each other and whoever wins will get an exclusive interview with him. Immediately, the reporters start pummeling each other, as Ig walks away and into a bar. The bartender wants Ig to leave, but Ig, using the power of the horns, is there to ask the patrons if anyone the real events of Mary’s murder. Instead of answering him, the people starts revealing their innermost thoughts, like the bartender, who says he wants to burn down the bar and get the insurance money. As Ig continues to inquire about Mary, the bartender begins to burn down the bar. As Marilyn Manson’s version of “Person Jesus,” plays, Ig leaves the bar in a cloud of smoke, where we see the group of reporters outside still beating on each other. Ig passes them, getting into his car and driving off.
