Play-Doh Cake Playset Contains Penis-Shaped Tool; Parents Are Pissed

Play-Doh Sweet Shoppe Cake Mountain Playset

As a child, I played with my share of Play-Doh, the wildly popular, colorful modeling clay used for both fun and education. As an adult, I’ve gifted a ton of the stuff to my hordes of godchildren, nieces, and nephews. These days, there’s all kinds of variations of the modeling compound with many accessories, playsets, and other tools to accompany it.

But, let’s talk about one of those tools – one that appeared to be more dildo than Play-Doh. Yes, that’s right, I said dildo, as an “extruder tool” that comes with the Play-Doh Sweet Shoppe Cake Mountain Playset is, in fact, shaped like a penis. And when you squeeze the Play-Doh out of it to make the “icing,” well, you can imagine what that looks like, right?

Here’s a screenshot of the tool in use, captured from a video from the product’s Amazon page:

[What does this look like to you?]

If it’s not clear to you how this looks, just see below for some of the posts by angry parents who gifted this playset to their children this holiday season only to realize that they’d given their kids a veiny, phallic, ejaculating toy with balls-inspired handles (via Toyland):

Anyhow, the angry parents have reportedly been posting their complaints about the product with the photos to Play-Doh’s official Facebook page, but claim their posts are being deleted.

An official post on the Play-Doh Facebook page does address the complaints about the extruder tool that’s included in the Play-Doh Cake Mountain playset and says that the Hasbro — the current manufacturers of Play-Doh — is working to replace it in the set with a different tool. Customers who got the penis tool can call Hasbro’s Customer Service Department at 800-327-8264 for a replacement extruder (that I’m assuming is more age appropriate).

Ok, so let’s keep in mind that the manufacturer’s recommended age for this product is 3 years old and up. But, I think that a child as young as 3 wouldn’t even think to associate this tool with a penis and their play would be so supervised that the parents would intercept the tool before it gets into their tiny child’s hands. For parents whose older children got the set and actually did think “hmm…penis” when they saw it, now might be a good time to have that “birds and the bees” talk. Penises are a part of life. As far as that extruder tool goes, when used as directed, it really is just a harmless toy. So, instead of letting your Christmas be “completely ruined,” as one parent reportedly wrote, how about you laugh it off instead of having your children think it’s something “bad.” Again, yes, it totally looks like a sex toy (albeit, a cheaply made one that you might want to think twice about sticking anywhere) and yes, there was obviously a whole team of product design people asleep at the wheel on this one, but it’s not the end of the world.

And by the way, HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!! This is the best story I’ve covered all year. Thanks, Play-Doh Dildo!

  1. I don’t see a problem with that toy. The
real problem is the people who keep associating objects to completely unrelated
images. As a kid I don’t remember looking at something and thinking “Hey!
This looks like a willy!” or anything like that, because I was a child and
I wasn’t one to be preoccupied by genitals. Well, maybe I didn’t have a dirty
enough mind to think that this toy was shaped like a peeny, but a lot of
parents seem to do. They seems to assume that because they “see it”,
their children will do as well. I’m sure that most of the kids would see the
toy as what it really is: A cake decorating tool. If your kid thinks it is
otherwise, maybe it would be a good idea to have a talk with them. As something
any good parents would do. That’s all.

  2. Some people want to do whatever they can to be as offended and butthurt as possible.

My girls have this set, hell, I’ve played with this set with them, and honestly, I never used that extruder and thought “Holy Shit…that looks like a penis” (unlike this eggplant that a friend of mine grew in his garden…I guess I should be offended that nature would allow something so phallic to grow). This says a whole lot more about the parents than it does Play-Doh. Even had my mind made such a quick connection, my girls have no reference point (4 and almost 3 year-old twins), so it’s just a tool that puts Play Doh plus on their Play Doh ice cream and Play Doh cookies.
