| Famed TV Producer Glen A. Larson (Battlestar Galactica, Knight Rider) Dies |

Glen A. Larson, who produced some of the biggest and highly remembered TV programs of the 1970s and 1980s, including Knight Rider, Magnum P.I., and the original version of Battlestar Galactica among them, died on Friday at the UCLA Medical Center. He was 77. Larson’s son James had reported that his father had suffered from esophageal cancer. Larson in many senses was like a Norman Lear of his genre, and like Lear at his peak, had several shows running at once on the air. However, unlike Lear, Larson’s programs weren’t critically lauded for the most part, and Emmy awards were non-existent. But what the programs did supply was a kind of wide-eyed fantasy skein which ran as a common thread through most of them. A large and loyal fanbase, mainly young teenage boys, watched and devoured these programs week after week and snatching up all forms of these shows via marketing, whether it be a BSG‘s Cylon Space Craft toy or a replica of a K.I.T.T. car from Knight Rider. It was this rabid cult fanbase that kept these shows flourishing and remaining in the subconscious.

Earlier this week, there were reports of Universal negotiating a deal to get Justin Lin to direct back-to-back Fast and Furious films, and eventually end the franchise. While the end is inevitable, it’s really hard to know when a franchise like the Fast and Furious could end, because as long as it is a huge profit, the studio will continue to produce more sequels. The last four films have seen huge box office results, with each new installment grossing more than their predecessor. But the studio talking to Lin could mean that the end is near. Now, Universal chairman Donna Langley is talking about it, saying that there will be at “least three more” movies and that depends on Furious 7‘s box office performance. Hit the jump for more.

| Black Metal Friday: “Umenneske” by Taake |

The Norwegian word “umenneske” translates to brute, animal, beast, monster devil, or demon, all of which are fairly accurate analogies for the style of black metal offered up by Bergen-based band Taake. The band’s name itself is the Norwegian word for fog. Formed in 1993 by leader and vocalist Hoest, Taake has been purveying their over-the-top brand of black metal in the most nihilistic fashion possible for over two decades. The band is an electric live act and have a penchant for doing anything they can to piss off whatever establishment they find themselves surrounded by. In 2007, they were thrown out of Germany after Hoest appeared onstage in Essen with a swastika painted on his chest, an act that is strictly forbidden by German law. The singer explained that the act was meant not as any sort of political or racially motivated act, but as a statement against censorship. Taake has issued 6 studio albums to date and numerous demos and EPs. From their fourth studio album, 2008’s eponymous Taake, here they are with the official video for the song “Umenneske.”
