If you’ve heard one Spider-Man joining the Avengers rumor, you’ve probably heard them all. By now you’d think that many would have given up hope on the idea that Sony would let their popular superhero franchise character go or even share him with their rival studio, Marvel. We came pretty close to seeing that happen last month during the events of the Sony hack with e-mail leaks revealing that Sony was discussing sharing the character. It even went as far as rumors of Amazing Spider-Man star letting Andrew Garfield out of his contract to make room for a another reboot if Marvel reclaimed the rights. But in the weeks after it, news seemed to cool down, and there were no signs that Sony was going to let Spidey go.
However, big news, potentially great news if you are a fan of Spider-Man and Marvel Studios. A major scoop from Latino Review has it now that the webslinger will come to the Marvel fold, and be introduced in Avengers: Infinity War Part I. But that is only a tiny portion of the spoilers – which include the major events in Phase 3 that will have a huge impact on the Infinity War films – that follow after the jump.
Before we get into Spider-Man’s introduction, let’s set our sights on Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
SPOILERS…
That chapter starts with Captain America: Civil War. According to Latino Review, it is Bucky who assassinated Howard Stark, Tony Stark’s father. This revelation would be one of the factors that leads to the events in the film. While Tony hasn’t made any efforts to hide the fact that his relationship with his father was shaky, I’m sure there will be much more to it. The report adds that Iron Man and Captain America will fight, with Iron Man ending up being discouraged. Again, it is not clear how he ends up this way. But Black Panther is introduced, and Crossbones kills Cap. Quite a shocking spoiler if it is true.
Phase 3 will also have Thor: Ragnarok. As the subtitle suggest, it is a cataclysmic event of apocalyptic proportions. The report says that many Asgardians will die, with some being resurrected, but the film ends with Thor being put in prison, which was described as a galactic prison.
In between these two films, Scott Derrickson‘s Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, will be released. While we still have yet to find out what the film is actually about, it is believed that it will involve the astral plane, and that Dr. Strange will be on the shortlist of heroes to lead the Avengers in Cap’s absence.
Now onto Spider-Man. While Latino Review cannot find the paper trail to the source, they are hearing that Spider-Man will be introduced in Avengers: Infinity War Part I. As you may remember, the original plan was to introduce him in Civil War, but since that didn’t pan out, the next logical movie would have to be Infinity War Part I.
So with Cap dead, Thor in prison, and Iron Man “moping around,” the Avengers could look very different by the start of the first half of Infinity War. While there is no definite roster, the team could be comprised of Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Black Panther, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man, Wasp, Captain Marvel, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jewel/Power Woman, ANY of the New Inhumans, ANY of the classic Inhumans, ANY of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and ANY Cosmic Marvel characters Guardians chooses to send to Earth…oh, and Spider-Man.
So what about the founding members? Well, they apparently will make their appearance in Infinity War Part II.
Now the biggest question surrounding Spider-Man is, how will this affect The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4, and the spinoff films like Sinister Six, Venom, and the all female team? Are plans for those films scrapped? Or will they try to work out some sort of sharing deal like they did before?
Of note, Latino Review has a great track record when it comes to scoops of the superhero film variety. So, if this all gets confirmed, it will make for some very exciting storytelling in the MCU. I’m sure there are a lot of us who are our crossing fingers for this one. According to Latino Review writer El Mayimbe, this scoop was originally heading to Deadline to report before LR hijacked it!
