With rumors of Jake Gyllenhaal replacing Tom Hardy as Rick Flag in Suicide Squad being put to rest, it was back to looking for who could fill the role as the founder of the deadly group for David Ayer‘s comic book adaptation.
Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal are now the two names rumored to be attached to the role. In addition, there are conflicting reports as to who Gary Sinise could be playing in the film, one, while Joe Manganiello is said to be up for Deathstroke.
LatinoReview’s El Mayimbe was the first to break the story of Criminal Minds star Sinise negotiating for of General Eiling. While CinemaBlend concurs with such talks, they say that Sinise will not be playing Eiling, nor will he be playing Deathstroke. In that same report, CinemaBlend says that Manganiello is rumored to be up for the role of Deathstroke.
Moving on to Edgerton and Bernthal, the two are rumored to be in contention for the role of Rick Flag. Edgerton is coming off Ridley Scott’s biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, while Bernthal may have a slight edge over Edgerton as he was last seen in Ayer’s WWII tank drama Fury. But there is no reason to believe that Bernthal’s involvement in Fury will earn him a role in the film.
Until there is actual confirmation, we should consider all four aforementioned names as rumors. Should any of them be added to the cast, they will join Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto.
Suicide Squad is scheduled for a second quarter start date, and is expected to be released August 5, 2016.
