Arrow fans have known from the start that Ray Palmer aka The Atom was on the way to Starling City in Season 3 last October. Geeks of Doom heralded the arrival of Brandon Routh as the new billionaire owner of Queen Enterprises, along with some other fresh faces, back in September (read about that here). Now, after months of teasing holograms of Palmer’s “special project,” the first official photo of Brandon Routh as The Atom has been released.
Check out the photo here below.
In the comics, the Atom has the ability to shrink to minuscule size and has superhuman strength. It looks like Palmer will only have the strength for now, but who knows? Something else to squeal about — another Flash/Arrow crossover with The Atom crossing over, too!
Slated to debut on the February 25, 2015 episode (Ep. 315) titled “Nanda Parbat,” the costume’s structure is of a different material, but still rocks the same color scheme. Of the tech, Executive Producer Mark Guggenheim recently said the following (per Variety):
“Ray’s the first technology-based hero that we’ve done. Our heroes, on “˜Arrow’ at least, tend to be very sort of fisticuff-oriented. Ray is trying something brand new, also brand new for us too. He’s creating what we call the Super Suit, the ATOM suit that is really at the cutting edge of technology, both in the real world and on the show. He’s also going to have to discover that a super suit does not a hero make. Part of the thing that we’re always trying to be true to is putting on a costume is the easy part. It’s being the hero that’s the really difficult part and one does not mean you’ve accomplished the other.”
The Atom will be appearing in an upcoming episode of The Flash. Also, The CW is in the early stages of figuring out if Routh — who you might recall played Superman in Warner Bros. 2006 film Superman Returns — will have his own Arrow spin-off, The Atom.
Without further ado, The Atom…
