Favorite Films of 2014 - The LEGO Movie

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller won’t be returning to direct The LEGO Movie sequel, they will however be writing the film’s screenplay and producing alongside Dan Lin and Roy Lee. Chris McKay who was originally set to direct it, will be moving on to direct The LEGO Batman Spinoff, which will also be produced by Lord and Miller.

Now a new report says that Rob Schrab, director of episodes of TV series such as Community and Children’s Hospital will now helm The LEGO Movie sequel. Hit the jump for more.

According to THR, plot details are still being kept a secret. Jared Stern and Michelle Morgan will also be credited for the story along with Lord and Miller.

Warner Bros. president of creative development and worldwide production Greg Silverman said:

“The LEGO Movie captivated critics and audiences on a global scale with its irresistible blend of humor, imagination and fun. Warner Bros. is excited to build our relationship with The Lego Group with this new adventure, and we join them in welcoming the multi-talented Rob Schrab to the Lego family as he takes the helm of The Lego Movie Sequel.”

Rob Schrab is probably best known for his work on Community, The Sarah Silverman Progam, The Mindy Project, and Children’s Hospital. His only feature film writing credit is for the animated Halloween movie Monster House alongside Pamela Pettler and Community creator Dan Harmon. Monster House was actually nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature (up against Cars and eventual winner Happy Feet), believe it or not, while The LEGO Movie was famously snubbed, which Lord had a quick remedy for.

Before Chris McKay moved on to The LEGO Batman Spinoff, he was best known for his work on Robot Chicken and Moral Orel, and other dark animated comedy series on Adult Swim. So by looking at who Warner Bros. is hiring, they definitely want someone who can maintain that balance of light and dark humor, and Schrab seems to fit that mold.

The LEGO Batman Spinoff is eyeing a May 2017 release, while The LEGO Movie sequel could be released sometime in 2018. Another LEGO spinoff movie, Ninjago, will be released in 2016.
