Ruth Negga In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The first official casting for AMC’s TV series adaptation of the popular comic book Preacher from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg has been announced.

Ruth Negga, who plays Raina on ABC’s Marvel series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has been cast as the female lead in Preacher, a character named Tulip. Tulip is the ex-girlfriend of the main character of the show, Jesse Custer, a preacher who merges with an entity that has escaped Heaven, giving him the ability to command those who can hear and understand him to do as he says.

In addition to Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., Negga has also starred in The Samaritan, World War Z, and Jimi: All Is by My Side among others. She will next be seen playing Lady Taria in the upcoming World of Warcraft movie directed by Duncan Jones, titled Warcraft.

Here’s a description of the Preacher comic book series:

Preacher follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned His responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making Him answer for His dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is one of the most iconic bad guys in print – an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers – a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.

No other actors who might be in line for some of the other roles are known at the moment.

Preacher is Rogen and Goldberg will handle writing and executive producer duties, and will direct the pilot episode. Sam Catlin will be the showrunner, also serving as a executive producer along with Neal Moritz, Vivian Cannon, Ori Marmur, Ken Levin, and Jason Netter.

  1. The casting for this is already a bad omen! Yes, Ruth Negga is an attractive young lady, but Tulip O’Hare is supposed to be a blond Texan redneck woman! And does Ruth really look like someone who be named “Tulip O’Hare”? I also think that airing Preacher on AMC is a bad idea; yes, AMC has aired edgier programming like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, but they could more easily get away with the constant profanity and extreme content of the comic if it aired on HBO or Showtime.
