We’ve seen zombies as the antagonist in action, horrors, and comedies. Sometimes it can be a combination of all three. But we’ve rarely seen the undead characters in an intimate family drama like Maggie. The film sees a father protecting his daughter, who has been bitten and is slowly turning.
Set in a zombie-infected world, Arnold Schwarzenegger will play the father who protects his slowly turning daughter (Abigail Breslin) from law enforcement and the CDC. Lionsgate obtained the distribution rights for the film last year, and it will make its big screen debut at the Tribeca Film Festival later this year. Now we are getting our first look at the film. Hit the jump to check out the first trailer for Maggie.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
There’s a deadly zombie epidemic threatening humanity, but Wade (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a small-town farmer and family man, refuses to accept defeat even when his daughter Maggie (Abigail Breslin) becomes infected. As Maggie’s condition worsens and the authorities seek to eradicate those with the virus, Wade is pushed to the limits in an effort to protect her. Joely Richardson co-stars in this post-apocalyptic thriller.
Maggie is perhaps the most subdued zombie film we have seen in a while. Seeing a vulnerable Schwarzenegger is a bit strange given his stints in action films, but it is a bit refreshing to see him do something more intimate and dramatic. Now Breslin is no stranger to zombies. She appeared in Zombieland alongside Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, and Woody Harrelson, as one of the last remaining survivors of the zombie apocalypse. But in Maggie, we see her slowly turn into a zombie.
There are hints of action and (zombie?) romance, but for the most part this is not your ordinary zombie film.
Henry Hobson directs, based on a script written by John Scott 3 that came from the infamous Black List.
Maggie also stars Laura Cayouette. It opens in limited release on May 8.
