Jason Segel (The Muppets) and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) to write and co-direct the latest LEGO Movie spinoff, The Billion Brick Race. The two, better known for their writing, will be making their directorial debuts with the new film. Ninjago and The LEGO Batman Movie are among the other LEGO-related movie spinoffs slated for release.
We can’t be sure what the film will be about since it is in the early stages of development. But if Segel and Pearce are on board as writers and directors, then you can be sure it will be funny and action-packed. Hit the jump for more.
The LEGO Movie co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will help produce the film. Dan Lin and Roy Lee are also on board as producers.
Segel is no stranger to writing comedies having penned the scripts for The Muppets, The Five-Year Engagement, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Pearce wrote Iron Man 3, the Marvel One-Shot All Hail the King, as well as Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation. He is also tapped to write the Sherlock Holmes 3 screenplay, and is working on a Ghostbusters movie for Sony.
While the film didn’t earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Film, there is no denying the massive success of The LEGO Movie. Having earned $468 million worldwide, Warner Bros. is now in a position to keep the franchise alive by producing sequels and spinoffs, pretty much mirroring what Disney is doing with their Marvel and Star Wars films.
Charlie Bean will direct Ninjago, which is set for a 2016 release. In 2017, Will Arnett returns to voice Batman in The LEGO Batman Movie, directed by Chris McKay. Rob Schrab replaces Phil Lord and Chris Miller to direct The LEGO Movie 2, which opens in theaters in 2018.
While no release date has been formally announced, it is very likely that The Billion Brick Race could hit theaters in 2019.
