‘Tomorrowland’ Director Brad Bird Says ‘The Incredibles 2’ Is His Next Film

Brad Bird is one of a select few who has made the successful jump from directing animation features to live-action ones. The man who brought us animated films like The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille went on to direct Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. His next live-action film, Tomorrowland, hits theaters in just a few weeks, and now he is already talking about his next project.

During the press junket for Tomorrowland, the Bird said that The Incredibles 2 is going to be his next project, and that the sequel is currently in the writing stages. He also confirmed that he was approached by Kathleen Kennedy about Star Wars.

Bird told Collider that he was working on The Incredibles 2 script, but didn’t confirm that he would be directing it,

Oh yeah I have pages, a bunch of pages. I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like. I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie. I’m just focusing on getting Tomorrowland out into the world and playing with the Incredibles sandbox again.

It’s no surprise that Bird is still writing the sequel, after all he was busy working on Tomorrowland. The thought of using unused concepts from the first film isn’t much of a surprise either. A lot of the times subplots get edited out, but actually make for a full-length feature if expanded upon. But Bird stopped short of confirming that The Incredibles 2 will be his next directorial effort, so when asked whether or not it will be, he said “it feels like it to me.”

As to when we could see the film, that is still unknown. Last year, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that an Incredibles sequel was on the way. Finding Dory is expected to open in 2016, and the Untitled Dia De Los Meurtos Movie is yet to be scheduled and is possibly looking at a 2017 release. This means that The Incredibles 2 is projected for a 2017 release.

On the subject of Star Wars, Bird admitted that he was approached to direct a Star Wars films, but wouldn’t clarify which one.

“Well Kathy and I have discussed the possibility of””I mean she’s basically saying this is a very large sandbox and other people can play in it. I was particularly attracted to the idea of picking up and””J.J. got very excited about the notion of shaping the next trilogy, and that idea was interesting to me too. But I kind of””I’m writing a sequel to The Incredibles and I can’t think too much farther beyond that. I have other things I want to do as well.”

With Josh Trank now off one of the Star Wars Anthology films, it’s unlikely that Bird would ever consider taking the job unless he was willing to get right into it after The Incredibles 2. However, based on the statement, he doesn’t necessarily take himself out of the running, and is open to the idea of possibly directing one in the near future.
